Code of Ethics: Navigating Cybersecurity Career Paths with a Moral Compass featuring guests from NSA and Austen King

Our values as a society define who we are and what positions we take when faced with ethical questions. Having access to sensitive information on a network puts you in a place where you must behave with moral responsibility. Being able to help shape the fabric of the internet can have you facing questions like “What are the implications for citizens, not just in my country but around the world, by these decisions?”But let's not get ahead of ourselves… In this episode, you’ll first hear how our three guests got into cyber to begin with. They say to mind your ‘P’s and Q’s; but this is cyber so we’re talking about Pentesting and Quantum and how both challenge our guests to make our networks and the internet safer for everyone.

Playing to Win: Game Theory and Cybersecurity- featuring guests Seth Hamman and DJ Strickland

Playing to Win: Game Theory and Cybersecurity- featuring guests Seth Hamman and DJ Strickland

We don't play around in cybersecurity, but we definitely game! In this episode, our guests detail the role that games and game strategy play in teaching us how to think like an adversary and keep safe online. We chat with DJ Strickland about his work and advocacy in bringing more representation into the cyber community through video games and comic books. But, like DJ experienced, we learn that hackers use adversarial thinking to exploit vulnerabilities in computer systems. So, our host challenges guest Dr. Seth Hamman to a tense game of rock-paper-scissors to show how game theory can help us understand the motivations of cybercriminals and anticipate their actions to protect ourselves against them. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting to learn about online safety, you won’t want to miss this episode to level up your cybersecurity skills and stay safe online! After you listen, you can put your own game theory skills to the test by completing this week’s episode challenge!

Balancing Act- Women in Cybersecurity on Managing Risks and Opportunity featuring guests Erica Wilson and Jamie Kemp

It’s Women’s History month and we’re excited to not only focus on women and girls in cybersecurity but also some aspects of risk management. Not all people or businesses can tolerate the same amount or type of risk… so that means everyone looks at cybersecurity differently. Risk management is about making smart decisions. What are you risking when you decide to take a certain class or download a particular application? Are you missing out on friends? Are you sacrificing speed on your device? What does that type of analysis look like in the cyber career space? We’ll not only chat about the unique perspectives of our guests and how they got into cyber, but we’ll discuss resources and issues specific to girls and women in cybersecurity. By listening to our podcast and sharing it with your network, you’ll be helping us to raise awareness and accessibility of cybersecurity careers. Together, we can create a more diverse and resilient cybersecurity workforce that can tackle the challenges of the future. So, what are you waiting for? Tune in and join the conversation today!

It’s Defense Against the Dark Arts! - featuring guests Thomas Weeks and Ilana Payne

How is it possible to understand the ‘dark arts’ of how hackers take your information or to practice essential cyber skills? Cyber ranges! As well as some clever Capture the Flag (CTF) challenges of course! In this episode, we’ll talk about practicing cyber “on-the-range” and learning a little bit about how to secure our own systems. Our guests will share their points of view on the merits of cyber ranges as well as how Virginia is mobilizing to bring more schools and kids to participate in the cyber pipeline. We’ll also talk about what sorts of skills you need to get into doing cybersecurity and how anyone at any level shouldn’t be afraid to learn the ropes; or at least some Linux… For this week’s Episode Challenge, the Virginia Cyberrange has generously allowed us the use of one of their sites for a fun web challenge that’s not too much of a ‘sekret’. Even if you don’t uncover the answer this week, you’ll be able to observe some fun ways to hide information on websites. Find this episode’s Challenge at www.cryptologicfoundation.org/podcast
