Ep. 058 | The Murder of Jacob Wetterling

Ep. 058 | The Murder of Jacob Wetterling

Jacob Erwin Wetterling was an 11‑year‑old boy from St. Joseph, Minnesota who was kidnapped at gunpoint on October 22, 1989, while riding his bicycle home with his brother and a friend. His disappearance touched the nation and sparked frantic searches, media coverage, and advocacy from his parents, Jerry and Patty Wetterling, who went on to found the Jacob Wetterling Foundation and help pass the federal. For nearly 27 years, the case remained unsolved until 2016, when Danny Heinrich confessed to abducting, sexually assaulting, and murdering Jacob, finally leading authorities to his remains buried near Paynesville, Minnesota. Jacob’s tragic story profoundly impacted child safety laws in the U.S., and continues to remind communities of both the dangers children face and the enduring power of hope and advocacy.

Ep. 026 | The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey [Part 1 of 3]

[Part 1 of 3] The day after Christmas, 1996, Patsy Ramsey woke up early to get her family ready for a flight. On the staircase of her home, she found a 2.5 page ransom note informing her and her husband John that their daughter, 6-year-old JonBenét had been taken. It noted that if the family paid $118,000 in ransom, they would get her back. However, this promise was an empty one, as JonBenét's body was discovered in the basement of the home that afternoon, despite multiple searches. Many believe that it was someone in the Ramsey family who killed JonBenét, but could it have been an intruder? Well, this is A Trial by Podcast, so we'll let you be the judge. When it was revealed that the man had a very troubling past, the family became convinced that Max’s disappearance was not accidental but a deliberate act. Ep. 022 | The Disappearance of Brandon Swanson

Ep. 022 | The Disappearance of Brandon Swanson

On May 14th, 2008, 19-year-old Brandon Swanson drove his car into a ditch, but, by his own account, was not injured. He called his parents for help, but was unable to describe exactly where he was. He had been on the phone with them for over 45 minutes when he yelled “oh shit!” The line then went silent, and despite the fact that the car was found, Brandon was never seen again, and to this day, no one knows what happened to him. Was he the victim of foul play, did he decide to walk away from his life, or did a series of accidents not only take Brandon’s life but also hide his body away forever? Well, this is A Trial by Podcast, so we'll let you be the judge. Ep. 021 | TikTok Discovery: The Murders of Austin Wenner & Jessica Lewis

In 2020, 35-year-old Jessica Lewis and 27-year-old Austin Wenner were shot and killed by their landlord, Michael Dudley. Dudley then dismembered their bodies, put them into dufflebags and suitcases, and scattered their remains across bodies of water and forested areas in and around Seattle. The first set of remains was discovered by a group of teenagers, who posted a series of TikTok videos documenting their discovery. In this episode, not only do we tell Jessica and Austin’s story, but we discuss what is the proper way to act if you ever were to (God-forbid) discover human remains.
