#4 Eruption from Hell: Experience the Apocalypse of the Pompeii Volcano | DOCUMENT History

🌍 What would your city look like if a large volcano erupted and burned everything in its path? Dividing the landscape, in the space of a few moments, between piles of ash and lava flows?
Unfortunately, the ancient inhabitants of Pompeii did not have to imagine this terrible scenario. And for good reason, the Italian city was completely destroyed. Pompeii was affected by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in the year 79. On October 24, the volcano erupted, shortly after 13:00 hours, the Plinian phase began. Surprisingly, this eruption occurred the day after Vulcanalia, the feast of the Roman god of fire and volcanoes. The devastation was immense. Ash covered the entire city. The inhabitants of Pompeii, instead of suffocating in the ashes, died immediately from the powerful heat. The volcano expelled superheated gases, which descended down the mountainside, causing avalanches and reaching temperatures of more than 1200 degrees. At those temperatures, no living thing can withstand.

💥 THE VOLCANO OF POMPEII:
- In the early 1st century AD, Pompeii was a thriving resort town for the most distinguished Roman citizens. Cobblestone streets were lined with elegant houses and villas. Taverns and cafes, public baths, brothels and small factories were crowded with tourists, townspeople and slaves. The stadium, with a capacity of 20,000, received many visitors and the squares and open-air markets bustled with activity. About 12,000 people lived in Pompeii and almost as many in the surrounding area on the eve of the terrible eruption in 79.
Before that, the city had a complex water system, a strategic port and more than a hundred streets that once bustled with Pompeians, the inhabitants of Pompeii. But also attractive places such as forums, baths, an amphitheater and much more.


At that time, the forums were the true heart of public life. These squares were the religious and political center where the inhabitants of the city of Pompeii gathered. They were also the economic heart of the city, the place where transactions and commercial exchanges took place.
The theaters of the time are an important place for the inhabitants to watch or perform comedies and tragedies.
The Basilica: This building houses the duumvirs who preside over justice. The inhabitants also gather here during the cold season to hold working meetings on legal and economic problems that are also dealt with in the Forum.
The Comitium is a building reserved for the election of the city's magistrates.
Pompeii's amphitheater seats 20,000 spectators, where gladiator fights were held, a very popular entertainment for the inhabitants of the time!

So Pompeii was a bustling city almost 2,000 years ago, in what is now southern Italy. But in the fall of '79, the nearby volcano, Vesuvius, erupted. It spewed smoke and toxic gases 30 km away, which quickly spread to the city. Overnight, Pompeii and most of its 10,000 inhabitants disappeared under a layer of ash.
Did you know? The word "volcano" originated with the Pompeii disaster. In fact, the term comes from Roman mythology, Vulcan was the god of fire. And unfortunately, the term "god of fire" was appropriate on that day, October 24, 1979...

On October 24, after centuries of dormancy, Mount Vesuvius erupted in southern Italy, devastating the thriving Roman towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum and killing thousands of people. The cities, buried under a thick layer of volcanic material and mud, were never rebuilt and were forgotten in the course of history, until they were rediscovered hundreds of years later.
