Water Cooler: Fyre Festival, Climax, Police Story 2, Battle Angel: Alita, Beale Street, Titan Games, Kavalier & Clay, Sparrow Creek

On the January 21, 2019 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor in chief Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film managing editor Jacob Hall, weekend editor Brad Oman, senior writer Ben Pearson, and writers Hoai-Tran Bui and Chris Evangelista to talk about what they’ve been up to at the Water Cooler. You can subscribe to /Film Daily on iTunes, Google Play, Overcast, Spotify and all the popular podcast apps (here is the RSS URL if you need it). Opening Banter: This is an exciting week at /Film HQ because three of our writers are getting ready to go to Park City Utah for Sundance. Guys, are you prepared? At The Water Cooler: What we’ve been Doing:Peter took an Improv comedy introductory class to help learn how to be more in the moment in his magic. It’s been raining a lot in Los Angeles, so last week Peter didn’t go out much. He did go to the Magic Castle and had a really good conversation with some of the magicians there about his current path in magic. Brad attended a Mormon wedding in Utah for his girlfriend’s sister and had to do so many errands and decorating, and even got a pedicure for the first time. HT went to the preview for the Battle Angel: Alita - Passport to Iron City immersive event. Ben went to An Evening with Ludwig Goransson What we’ve been Reading:Chris read Flying with Confidence: The proven programme to fix your flying fears. It didn’t help. He also read Flying without Fear: Effective Strategies to Get You Where You Need to Go, which was a little better, but not by much. Jacob finished the first three hardcover volumes of Battle Angel Alita. Ben read The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. What we’ve been Watching:Peter watched the first episode of Titan Games thanks to Jacob’s recommendation. He watched the Fyre Fraud documentary on Hulu, and the Fyre documentary on Netflix. (Chris and HT watched both, Jacob watched the Hulu one) Brad watched Tully and The Perfect Bid: The Contestant Who Knew Too Much. Jacob watched Gaspar Noe’s Climax, Fyre Fraud, True Detective season 3, Practical Magic, Halloween, and started his annual Game of Thrones rewatch. Ben watched Police Story 2, the first episode of Escape at Dannemora, Bad Times at the El Royale, Hotel Artemis, The Philadelphia Story, and The Women Chris watched Fyre Fraud and Fyre, along with The Standoff at Sparrow Creek. HT saw If Beale Street Could Talk, The Commuter, Fyre Fraud and Fyre, caught up with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. What we’ve been Eating:Peter ordered new jeans that are 6 inches smaller, and they fit! He also started taking less heartburn medication because apparently he’s healthier now. New Keto or low sugar food discoveries include ChocZero squares, ChocZero Peppermint Bark. and ChocoRite Chocolate Crispy Caramel (which tastes like an 100 grand candy bar). Jacob wants to thank SlimFast’s Keto peanut butter cups for existing and loves Swerve cake mix. Brad tried Mountain Dew Amp Game Fuel and The Most Stuf Oreos. What we’ve been Playing:Jacob finished his first batch of Warhammer 40K figures, assembled and primed a whole lot more, and practiced his painting on some metallic Reaper figures. Spoiler Conversation: The Marvels

Spoiler Conversation: The Marvels

On the November 13, 2023 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor Ben Pearson is joined by /Film editors Jacob Hall and BJ Colangelo to have a spoiler-filled conversation about The Marvels.Opening Banter: In The Spoiler Room: The MarvelsQuick acknowledgement of its sub-par box office performance, the delight some people are taking in its failure, etc. If you want to listen to people gleefully celebrate this movie’s failure, I’m sure there are plenty of places to do that, but that’s not what we’re doing here.Brief reactionsJacobBJBenBreakdownThe movie opens with Dar-Benn, played by Zawe Ashton. She’s now the leader of the Kree, and is searching for the Quantum Bands. She uncovers one of them and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) has the other. Before we get into the heroes, let’s talk about the villain. So Dar-Benn opens these jump points across the galaxy, and by the end of the movie, we realize she’s trying to use these portals to essentially siphon resources back to her home world of Hala – including Earth’s sun. (I’m not really sure how that works, and the movie isn’t super interested in the details, either.) But the jump points create some sort of anomaly in space, and Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) end up touching things they shouldn’t have touched, and Kamala Khan’s bangle/Quantum Band ropes her into one of the movie’s main ideas, which is that these three women are linked, and when any two of the trio use their powers simultaneously, it causes them to switch places. Antics ensue. At one point, they visit a planet called Aladna, where everyone sings as their primary form of communication, and it’s revealed that Captain Marvel is married to a prince. How did you think the film dealt with the relationship between the three women? Monica and Carol have history, Kamala worships Carol.Sam Jackson on a space station, using Flerkens kittens as escape pods.Eventually Dar-Benn gets a hold of both Quantum Bands, is nearly killed by the power of using both at the same time, and inadvertently rips a hole in the multiverse. Monica convinces Carol to make amends for destroying the Supreme Intelligence and basically causing a Kree civil war by flying into Hala’s sun and reigniting it with her powers. Kamala and Carol supercharge Monica, who flies into the multiversal hole to close it, but ends up being stuck on the other side.I guess the Khans are living in Louisiana now?Kamala goes to recruit Kate BishopThe mid-credits sceneMonica wakes up in a medical bay overseen by Dr. Hank McCoy, aka Beast, played once again by Kelsey Grammer. Monica’s mother, Maria Rambeau, played by Lashana Lynch, is sitting at her bedside, but this is an alternate universe version of the character who didn’t die during the five years Monica was Blipped, and she apparently has no idea who Monica is. BJ, you wrote an article about this, so tell me what that costume was that Maria was wearing.Kevin Feige continues to slow-play the introduction of the X-Men into the MCU.Closing thoughtsAll the other stuff you need to know:This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp.
