Sundance Day 1, Matt Smith Typecasting and WTF Is This Year's Academy Awards Going To Be Like?

On the January 25, 2019 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor in chief Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film managing editor Jacob Hall and writer Hoai-Tran Bui to read some brief reader emails, talk about the latest film and tv news, and we’ll visit Ben Pearson, Brad Oman and Chris Evangelista in Park City Utah to hear about the first day of the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. Opening Banter: Brad, Ben and Chris are at Sundance, and news has slowed down. On The Site: Jack Giroux’s Interview with ‘Destroyer’ Director Karyn Kusama on Showing a New Side of Los Angeles and Nicole Kidman Rob Hunter’s The Best Movies Set in Boys Schools That You’ve Never Seen Britt Hayes’ Hidden Streams: A Crazy Slasher Movie, Underrated Martin Scorsese, and One of the Best Film Noirs Ever Made In The Mail Bag: Teal from Irvine, CA writes in to say that “A few weeks ago one of you mentioned a card game about pitching movie ideas to studio execs, and other players could stop mid-pitch and throw in a curve ball. I feel like this may have been what happened with Serenity. It started off as a pitch for a traditional pulpy thriller, and mid-way was promoted to include the whole [removed for spoilers], and instead of being treated as a joke everyone took it seriously.” Elissa F writes in to respond to Peter’s Best Picture comment about producers receiving the award instead of the director: “Huge fan of the podcast! Wanted to speak to something that was mentioned a few days ago when the Academy Award nominations were announced and many of you were wondering why producers and not directors were given the award for best picture. I think it is a common misconception that producers are only dealing with the financial aspects of a film when in many cases, producers can be a large part, if not the largest part of the creative process behind a film. Many times producers work on projects for years before a director comes on board. And once a director is in place, the producer still has a lot of say and control over how a film is made. Of course there are times when a director is the true visionary of the film and had developed the project initially. But in most of those cases you will find that the director is often also a producer. In any event, before a film is made, if there is even a minute chance that there may be awards consideration for a project, the credits are very heavily negotiated so that there are no disputes as to who should receive the award. I know this process well so wanted to give you my two cents! Love the show!! I listen every day!” In The News: Jacob: Spider-Man Spin-Off ‘Morbius’ Adds Former ‘Doctor Who’ Star Matt Smith HT: Ron Howard’s Next Movie ‘Hillbilly Elegy’ Gets Picked Up By Netflix in $45 Million Deal Jacob: Only Two Oscar-Nominated Songs Will Be Performed at This Year’s Academy Awards HT: ‘Wonder Woman 3’ Could End a Trilogy for Director Patty Jenkins Jacob: ‘Resident Evil’ TV Series in the Works at Netflix – Will It Actually Feel Like the Games This Time? Water Cooler: Project Hail Mary, The Last Stop in Yuma County, Ghosts, A Bigger Splash, and More

On the July 10, 2024 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor Ben Pearson is joined by /Film editor Jacob Hall to gather around the virtual water cooler and talk about what they’ve been up to.Jake from Ontario wrote to us on June 30: My question concerns the growing disparity between the TV Critic and audience Tomatometer scores on Rotten Tomatoes. The Boys, The Acolyte, and The Bear all received glowing critics scores and negative audience scores. In a recent episode, Jacob mentioned that although he loved the first three seasons of The Boys, he didn’t enjoy season 4 and passed the review to a colleague who liked it more. This practice caught my attention.Could you discuss the prevalence and ethics of this practice? Wouldn’t it be good business to publish a negative review when 9.3/10 sites are praising a show? In my opinion, Jacob would have been the perfect person to review this season and represent a large contingent of the audience who isn’t just reacting to the anti-MAGA politics, as some suggest is the reason for the lower audience score. Sorry if this sounds prickly, I’m legitimately curious to hear your thoughts.PS: Please focus on this specific practice and avoid discussing review-bombing or the binary nature of the Tomatometer, as those topics have been covered well by the podcast in the past.In the Water Cooler:What we’ve been Reading:Jacob read Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir, Dark Matter by Blake Crouch, and Challenger by Adam Higginbotham. What we’ve been Watching:Ben watched The Last Stop in Yuma County, A Bigger Splash, The Paper, and Callaway Went Thataway.Jacob watched The Bear season 3, Ghosts, and A Quiet Place: Day One.All the other stuff you need to know:You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today’s show at slashfilm.com, and linked inside the show notes./Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and TV as well as deeper dives into the great features from slashfilm.com. You can subscribe to /Film Daily on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify, and wherever you get your podcasts.Send your feedback, questions, comments, concerns, and mailbag topics to us at bpearson@slashfilm.com. I think the major reason people don’t go to chain theaters is not how big our TVs are or that everything is streaming, but the number of screens we have. We have 2 TVs, 2 laptops, and 2 cell phones for 2 people, and all have been used to watch movies. When I was a kid in the ‘70s, we had one TV in our living room that was controlled by my brother and my parents. If I wanted to watch anything else, I had to go to a movie theater. So when Bad News Bears came out, I saw it in the big chain theater 11 times! I love movies now, but do prefer one of the many repertory theaters we have here in Portland, Oregon. People are respectful and they serve beer/wine/cider and pizza without being expensive. I hardly ever go to our local chain theater, which is a pretty nice Regal, and when I do, there are usually about five other people in the theater and I never buy any concessions because it’s too expensive. I just can’t imagine it will be open much longer.Listener email: Donnie from Florida writes in: Love the podcast and have been listening for years. Shout-out to Peter and Hoai-Tran Bui, I still miss hearing them. My question is how do you find things to watch on streaming services? I notice the menus are just awful. We can only find the current 8 to 10 things that that particular streaming service is pushing at the time. Is there a site or system that you, or anyone else at /Film, uses to find the needles in the haystack of horrible streaming service menus? If Ryan happens to be on the episode, can he explain how the heck Peacock is still a thing? All the other stuff you need to know:You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today’s show at slashfilm.com, and linked inside the show notes./Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and TV as well as deeper dives into the great features from slashfilm.com. You can subscribe to /Film Daily on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify, and wherever you get your podcasts.Send your feedback, questions, comments, concerns, and mailbag topics to us at bpearson@slashfilm.com. MaXXXine is Somewhat Divisive, Plus A Couple of Listener Emails

On the July 5, 2024 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor Ben Pearson is joined by /Film editor BJ Colangelo to answer a listener email and talk about Ti West’s new movie MaXXXine.Ronny Cox is not dead! Apologies!Shout out to Angelica from North Texas, who wrote us an email pointing out a fascinating connection between the movie Burnt and season 3 of The Bear. Without spoiling things, I can say that there’s a moment in season 3 where Richie sees a fork on the floor of the restaurant, and if Angelica’s theory is correct, it could have pretty big consequences for what might happen in season 4. One Blink-And-You'll-Miss-It Moment In The Bear Season 3 Could Have Huge ConsequencesKarissa from Wisconsin sent us an email last month that I’ve been meaning to get to, and I thought now would be a good time: Love the podcast, and have been listening for years. Lately, I’ve been intrigued by the discussion between you and Ryan about the state of theaters. My husband and I started dating at a theater, and always watched probably 2-3 movies a month in theaters before Covid. We love theaters so much that we had our wedding pictures in a new theater that was built in our town in 2015. However, Covid made us update our TV and sound system at home for watching movies. It also made us less tolerant of bad moviegoers.Talking with our friends, we all agree that we have a great theater. However, we cannot stand the people that go to movies. Movies for us have been ruined by cell phones. Even adults are using their phones and being obnoxious during the movie. Between cell phone light and just rude talking, we barely see movies in theaters anymore. We started sitting in the front 3 rows, but half the time, we still see their lights because they’re so bright. We get so annoyed with it, we are renting a theater for us and our friends to see Twisters in July. I can deal with whispering and occasional talking. I cannot deal with the constant cell phone use anymore. Do you think theaters could do anything about cell phones? I know that would bring a lot of people I know back to theaters. In Our Feature Presentation: MaXXXine Review: Ti West And Mia Goth Bring Sexy Satanic Sleaze Back To Hollywood HorrorSpoiler-free thoughts about MaXXXineSpoilery thoughtsMaXXXine Ending Explained: How To Get Ahead In ShowbizAll the other stuff you need to know:You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today’s show at slashfilm.com, and linked inside the show notes./Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and TV as well as deeper dives into the great features from slashfilm.com. You can subscribe to /Film Daily on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify, and wherever you get your podcasts.Send your feedback, questions, comments, concerns, and mailbag topics to us at bpearson@slashfilm.com.
