'Heated Rivalry' and the Power of Slow-Burn Romance

This week on The Overshare Pamphlet, I finally give in to my latest obsession: Heated Rivalry.

With the season finale approaching, this episode is a mix of review, love letter, and pitch for anyone who hasn’t started the show yet. Five episodes in, Heated Rivalry has proven itself to be a modern TV standout — a rare series that’s completely captured the cultural conversation.

I break down why the show works so well, from its underdog rise as a low-budget Canadian exclusive to its global success, and dive into the decade-spanning, slow-burn romance between rival hockey players Shane Hollander and Ilya Rosenov. We talk queerness, secrecy, ambition, emotional repression, and why the show’s portrayal of intimacy and vulnerability feels so powerful and addictive.

I also explore why Heated Rivalry resonates across audiences, how it challenges hyper-masculine sports narratives, and why it feels like a true lightning-in-a-bottle moment for television.

Plus, Songs of the Week, featuring standout tracks from the show’s soundtrack and beyond.

New episodes every Monday at 6 a.m. UK time.

This episode also features my new sponsor, Yarok Plant-Based Hair Care, and I’m giving Spotify listeners an exclusive 15% off their entire order.
