Cash and Coffee | Knowing When to Use your Emergency Fund

When should you actually use your emergency fund? 💰

On this episode of Cash & Coffee – Along the Rock, hosts Emma Watts and Kayla Tenboer-Sipes break down a simple way to decide if dipping into your emergency savings is the right move.

Emma shares a real-life shopping dilemma—finding something she really wanted but realizing it would mean pulling money from her emergency fund. That leads to a helpful conversation about how to pause, think, and make a smarter financial decision.

Kayla introduces the N.U.N. method, a simple three-question test to help guide your decision:

Needed – Is it something you truly need?
Unexpected – Was it something you couldn’t plan for?
Now – Do you need it immediately?

If the answer isn’t yes to all three, it might be best to wait. Kayla also shares another powerful strategy: the 24-hour rule, which can help stop impulse purchases before they happen.

They also talk about:

Why emergency funds should cover 3–6 months of expenses
How to rebuild your emergency savings
Using sinking funds to plan ahead for purchases

If you’ve ever stood in a store debating whether to swipe your card or walk away, this episode is for you.

☕💵 Watch now to learn a simple trick that can help protect your emergency fund and keep your finances on track.
