Beyond the Pale: Anemia, The Missed Diagnosis S3E30

Beyond the Pale: Anemia, The Missed Diagnosis S3E30

What if the root cause of dozens of unexplained physical and psychological symptoms is not in your mind or your genes, but in your blood? Brendan Reesor, author of the book, ‘Beyond the Pale’, joins us to make a compelling case that anemia is one of the most underdiagnosed and misunderstood conditions driving a wide range of ailments that conventional medicine keeps failing to resolve.

Brendan walks us through the foundational role of oxygen in every system of the body and explains how even a moderate reduction in oxygen delivery can quietly erode your physical health, your emotional stability, and your mental clarity. When your cells are starved for oxygen, the downstream effects are far wider than fatigue. He connects anemia to somatic disorders, the very real physical symptoms that arise from physiological dysfunction, rather than psychological origin, and makes the case that this connection is consistently overlooked by practitioners who are simply not looking for it.

Perhaps most thought-provoking is Brendan's personal experience and research into gender dysphoria as a potential somatic expression of chronic anemia. It is a perspective rooted in his own journey and one that challenges us to ask harder questions before accepting a diagnosis as fixed or permanent.

Brendan also takes direct aim at the current standard of blood testing, arguing that the reference ranges used today are not sensitive enough to detect true anemia in many of the people who have it. He believes the entire framework for evaluating iron status and oxygen-carrying capacity needs to be overhauled, and he explains exactly why that matters for anyone who has been told their labs look fine while they keep feeling anything but.

We also dig into how a carnivore diet can dramatically shift the picture. The bioavailable iron, B12, and heme nutrients found in animal foods are precisely what a depleted body needs, and Brendan explains why whole food nutrition delivers results that no supplement protocol can fully replicate.

If you have been dismissed, misdiagnosed, or simply told to live with symptoms no one can explain, this conversation may change the way you think about your health entirely.
