Life, Liberty...and Toxicity?

Hello Poison Friends! Erin and I are taking a break from our breakdown of Johnson & Johnson's dark deeds, this week. Why? So we can celebrate America's Independence with stories of Founding Fathers and intrepid explorers of the nation and their encounters with poison.

We are going a bit deeper into the medicinal chaos of Dr. Benjamin Rush, the only doctor to sign the Declaration of Independence. A great follower and teacher of "heroic medicine," he was a believer in excessive bloodletting, administering purgatives, and using blistering agents to make the ailing (literally) sweat it out. He also taught Captain Meriwether Lewis, of the famed Lewis and Clark Expedition, all of his...remedies, should his team need them on the journey. Speaking of Meriwether Lewis, his death only 3 years after their return was full of suspicious details and conspiracy.

Finally, we need to discuss the death of George Wythe, member of the constitutional convention, friend and mentor to Thomas Jefferson, lawyer, professor, and all around good guy (especially for the time period). His sister's grandson, however, did not inherit this goodness. Some of Wythe's last words included, "I am murdered!"
