A Prayer for Growth in Your Relationship With God

There are two primary reasons we fail to grow in our understanding of God: pride and deceit. And the almost immediate internal response to reading that — "no, I don't think that's true of me" — is itself the clearest possible proof that both are present. It is the kind of honest, uncomfortable self-recognition that opens the door to genuine growth, and this episode begins right there, in that awkward and necessary moment of seeing ourselves clearly.

C.S. Lewis observed that God whispers in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, and shouts in our pains — and it is often through trials, mistakes, and long seasons of waiting that we come to know Him most deeply. Ephesians 3:16-19 captures the staggering scope of what is available to us in that knowing: the width, length, height, and depth of a love that surpasses knowledge, and the fullness of God Himself dwelling in us through faith. No matter how far we feel from Him, we can always draw near. And no matter how long we have known Him, there is always more to know.

Ponder Today

1. Pride and deceit are the two primary barriers to growing in our knowledge of God. The fact that we instinctively resist that diagnosis is itself evidence of their presence. Recognizing them honestly, rather than defending against them, is where growth begins.
2. God responds to our failures with patient, protective love — not condemnation. Like a tender father who listens attentively and then acts on our behalf, God does not leave us alone in our shame. He draws near, hears us out, and moves to protect us.
3. Trials, conflicts, and seasons of waiting are often where we come to know God most deeply. Just as working through a conflict with another person reveals their character in ways ease never does, our hardest seasons reveal God to us in ways that comfort alone cannot.
4. Humility is the posture that opens us to growth. God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6). Choosing to come before Him with a teachable, honest, and open heart is the single most important thing we can do to grow closer to Him.

A Prayer for You Today

Dear Heavenly Father, please forgive us for our pride and our deceit. I pray that You would help us to have humble hearts so that we can get to know You better. As we draw near to You, show us where we have been wrong so we can keep short accounts with You. You say that You oppose the proud but give grace to the humble — Father, we need Your grace. We want to know You better, but we often let too many things come before You. Please help us seek You first so we can grow closer to You, and help us make much of You and not ourselves. We need You. We love You. Help us to grow in our walks with You. Amen.
