What Changed For Bryan Kohberger After He Pleaded Guilty

Something changed for Bryan Kohberger between the day he pleaded guilty and the day he filed to take it back.

He was sentenced to four consecutive life terms after telling a judge he was pleading guilty because he was guilty. About a year later he filed a handwritten petition for post-conviction relief in Ada County District Court, representing himself, saying the confession was false and his innocence is the truth.

Tony Brueski and retired FBI behavioral analyst Robin Dreeke work through what he is claiming and what the shape of the claim gives away.

The petition alleges ineffective assistance of counsel and says his defense team never disclosed or reviewed evidence that would have helped him. It says he was given a grossly misleading picture of what a life sentence and death row in Idaho would look like. It blames threats, false promises and wrong information for the plea.

The breakdown covers the standard a judge applies to a claim like this. It covers why the appeal waiver he signed never closed this particular door. And it covers the question the families are left with, which is how many times a defendant with decades of time can come back to the same courthouse.

It also covers what he said to the New York Times about welcoming the death penalty again, and what the Goncalves family said in return. Dreeke reads the behavior behind the reversal and lands somewhere specific.

The four students who died in Moscow, Idaho, in November 2022 were Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin. There was no trial and no cross-examination. No motive was ever entered on the record, because prosecutors were never required to make him give one.

This channel covers the Bryan Kohberger case from the investigation through the plea and everything since. Subscribe for coverage of the Ada County ruling and the response from the families.
