She Was Murdered in 1967. The Man Who Did It Was 92 When He Was Finally Convicted. | Louisa Dunne | Part 1

Something different for the Midnight Mystery Archive: this case is solved. That's not how these episodes usually start. But the fact that it was solved is not the end of the story — it's why the story matters.

Louisa Dunne was murdered in Bristol, England on June 28th, 1967. She was 75 years old. In November 2024, 57 years later, a 92-year-old man named Ryland Headley was arrested at his home in Ipswich. In June 2025, he was convicted of her murder and rape. In July 2025, he was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 20 years. He will die there.

Part 1 is about Louisa and about what happened. Part 2 is about how they finally found him.

Louisa was born Louisa Jane Jarrett in 1892. She married Edwin Parker, a Bristol city councillor, and was on track to become the mayoress of one of England's major cities. They had two daughters, Iris and Edna. Edwin died in 1945. She remarried a man named John Dunne in 1952; he died in 1961. By 1967, Louisa had been a widow for six years. Her daughters were estranged. Her world had contracted to 58 Britannia Street in Easton, East Bristol — a tight terraced row where neighbors noticed everything, where raised voices carried between walls, and where Louisa was known as the woman who was always at her front door, always ready to talk.

Kevin spends time with who Louisa actually was before getting into the crime. She had been involved in the birth of the labor movement in Bristol. She was politically engaged, publicly visible, connected to the civic machinery of her city. By 1967, she was an elderly widow living alone on a quiet street. That trajectory — from political participant to isolated elderly woman — is the sharpest context for understanding why Ryland Headley selected her.

On the night of June 27th — 28th, 1967, Headley, who was 34 years old and also living in Bristol at the time, forced open the rear window of Louisa's terraced house. He raped her. When she screamed and struggled — and she did, that's in the record — he pressed a hand over her mouth and applied pressure to her throat. She was 75 years old, alone, in her own home, and she still fought back. He killed her. He also robbed her. The judge at his 2025 sentencing was explicit: this was premeditated. The murder was the consequence of her resistance.

Bristol Constabulary launched a massive investigation by 1967 standards: 2,000 statements, 8,000 house-to-house inquiries, and palm prints taken from 19,000 men and boys in the surrounding area — each one physically compared by hand against a palm print found on Louisa's rear window. There was no national fingerprint database in England in 1967. No computerized cross-referencing. The net was as large as the technology of the era could make it. Ryland Headley lived just outside the boundary of the house-to-house inquiries. He was not among the 19,000. The case went cold.

He did not stop with Louisa. In the late 1970s, Headley was living in Ipswich. He broke into the homes of two elderly women and raped them — the same target profile, the same method of entry, the same pattern of violence. He was convicted, originally sentenced to life, but the sentence was reduced to seven years on appeal. He served it and was released. He lived in Ipswich for decades more.

Two pieces of physical evidence from 1967 were preserved in storage: the palm print from the rear window, and semen found on the blue skirt Louisa was wearing when she was attacked. The tools to connect them to a suspect simply didn't exist yet.

Part 2 covers what a 2023 cold case review team found in that blue skirt, what a billion-to-one DNA match looks like as evidence, and what happened when investigators finally knocked on Ryland Headley's door in November 2024.
