Susan Smith's Prosecutor Reveals What Still Haunts Him 30 Years Later

In this exclusive interview, I sit down with Tommy Pope, the prosecutor who helped convict Susan Smith, to revisit one of the most infamous murder cases in American history and examine its striking parallels to the Lindsay Clancy trial. Pope takes us inside the Susan Smith case, the prosecution’s fight to prove why a mother killed her own children, and the evidence and arguments that ultimately led to her conviction. More than 30 years later, he also shares his perspective on the Clancy case, where questions surrounding motherhood, mental illness, motive, and criminal responsibility have once again captivated the nation. What can the Susan Smith case teach us about Lindsay Clancy—and how does a prosecutor approach the almost unimaginable question at the center of both cases: Why did she do it?
