Your House in the Storm: Finding Calm When Stress Knocks

Your House in the Storm: Finding Calm When Stress Knocks

Hey there, and welcome. I'm Julia Cartwright, and I'm so glad you're here with me today. Whether you're squeezing this in before your day gets away from you, or you're winding down after one of those Wednesdays that felt like it lasted three days, I see you. Stress has a way of creeping in like an uninvited houseguest, and today we're going to show it the door. So let's settle in together, and I promise this is going to feel good. Go ahead and find a comfortable seat wherever you are right now. Your couch, your desk, a park bench—nowhere fancy required. Let your shoulders drop away from your ears. You can close your eyes if that feels right, or just soften your gaze. Take a moment to arrive here, really arrive, like you're putting down your phone for the first time all day. Because you have. Now, let's start with something simple. Breathe in slowly through your nose for a count of four. Hold it for just a beat. Then exhale through your mouth like you're fogging up a mirror, for a count of six. That longer exhale? That's your nervous system's off switch. Let's do that one more time. In for four, and out for six. Beautiful. Now here's what we're going to do. I want you to think of your stress like weather. It's real, it's present, but it's not permanent. Maybe right now it feels like a thunderstorm—all thunder and electricity and chaos. Or maybe it's that gray, heavy fog that obscures everything. Whatever your stress weather looks like, I want you to imagine you're standing inside a cozy, solid house. The walls are thick. The roof is strong. That weather? It can rage outside all it wants, but in here, in this moment, you're safe. As we breathe together, imagine that with each exhale, you're opening a window just a crack. Not to let the storm in, but to let some of that pressure release. You're not fighting the weather. You're not pretending it isn't there. You're just creating a little space between you and it. Breathing in calm. Breathing out pressure. In through the nose, out through the mouth, for a count of six. Keep breathing this way for the next few minutes. If your mind wanders, that's not a mistake, that's just your mind being a mind. Gently bring yourself back to the breath. Back to the safety of this moment. Back home. And as we finish up, carry this with you: the next time you feel that stress creeping in, remember you have this breath. This anchor. This little house. You can access it anytime. Thank you so much for joining me on Stress Relief today. If this resonated with you, please subscribe so you never miss a moment of calm when you need it most. I'll see you next time.
