Parkinson’s Sensory Overload: Why Noise, Lights & Crowds Can Shut Your Brain Down

Parkinson’s Sensory Overload: Why Noise, Lights & Crowds Can Shut Your Brain Down

Have you ever been somewhere completely ordinary when suddenly your brain just says, “Nope, we’re done”?

The noise gets too loud.

The lights feel too bright.

You can’t focus.

You can’t think.

And sometimes you just need to get out.

That happened to me recently in IKEA. I was doing something as simple as looking at kitchen cabinets when two kids started banging pots and pans in one of the displays. Suddenly I couldn’t read the price tag, couldn’t concentrate, and without saying a word to Carmen, I turned around and walked away.

So what is actually happening in moments like that?

In this episode of Living with Parkinson’s: The Good, the Bad, and the Reality, I take the new Parkinson’s brain-network research we’ve been discussing and translate it into something we can actually use to understand everyday life.

We talk about:

• What the Somato-Cognitive Action Network, or SCAN, actually is
• Why I call it the brain’s “do something” system
• How an overloaded brain network may help explain sensory overload
• Why background noise can suddenly become impossible to filter
• How this may connect with fatigue, brain fog, motivation, and that “stuck” feeling
• Why reducing input can sometimes work better than pushing harder
• What this research could eventually mean for Parkinson’s treatments

And importantly, we separate what the research suggests today from what still needs to be studied.

For people navigating Parkinson’s solo, I also share a simple way to document real-life overload episodes so you can bring something concrete into your next doctor’s appointment.

You’ll also hear Carmen’s Care Partner Corner, where Carmen explains why taking overload seriously and simply asking, “Do you want to leave, or do you need a quiet break?” can make such a difference.

And there’s something important coming next.

In the next episode, I sit down with Dr. Jonathan Sackner-Bernstein for a deeper conversation about this research, what’s solid, what’s still early, and what it could eventually mean for people living with Parkinson’s.

Because maybe the question isn’t:

“Why can’t I handle this anymore?”

Maybe it’s:

“What is overwhelming my nervous system right now?”

“With Parkinson’s, medication is like coffee. It’s not about how strong it is. It’s about when you take it.”

⚠️ Important Note

This is my personal Parkinson’s journey. What works for me may not work for everyone. Parkinson’s is different for each person, and medication plans should always be discussed with your doctor or healthcare provider.
