The Wow Signal Mystery for Sleep

The Wow Signal Mystery for Sleep

On August 15, 1977, Ohio State University’s Big Ear radio telescope recorded a strong narrowband signal near the 1420 megahertz hydrogen line for about 72 seconds during its fixed drift scan, producing the famous printout intensity string 6EQUJ5 that rose and fell as a stationary sky source would pass through the beam. The signal came from a region of sky in the direction of Sagittarius and was later nicknamed after astronomer Jerry Ehman circled the line and wrote “Wow” in the margin, but repeated follow up observations of the same area and frequency range have not confirmed another detection that matches the original event. Because there is no verified repeat, no independent simultaneous recording by another instrument, and no proven natural or human source that accounts for its frequency, timing, and one time appearance, the origin of the signal has never been confirmed and the file is still open.
