They Served Our Country. Now Who’s There for Them? | Corey Roberts

This week on WKRP Montrose, Dennis and Rob sit down with Corey Roberts, an Army veteran and former human intelligence collector who founded Sovereign Roots Retreat—a 30-acre, nature-based retreat in Delta, Colorado, created to help veterans reconnect, heal, and find community.

Corey shares his own military background and why he believes veterans need more than traditional resources—they need trusted relationships with people who understand what they've been through. The retreat brings veterans together through hands-on experiences, peer support, and honest conversations around the campfire.

Dennis and Rob also talk with Corey about:

The veteran suicide crisis on the Western Slope and why local peer support matters.

How Sovereign Roots uses nature, blacksmithing, fly fishing, equine groundwork, and other activities to bring veterans together. Why the retreat operates one weekend a month like a reserve drill. The importance of creating a space where veterans can lower their guard and talk openly. The organization's new Peer Support Specialist Training initiative. How veterans with lived experience can become "beacons of hope" for others.

The challenges of running a completely volunteer-driven nonprofit. The upcoming Sovereign Roots Retreat golf fundraiser on September 12 at Devil's Thumb in Delta. This is a conversation about service, community, connection, and making sure the people who served our country don't have to face their struggles alone.
