What Happened Between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2? | The War Before Genesis - EP 3

What happened between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2? Genesis begins with God creating the heavens and the earth. But the very next verse describes the earth as “formless and void” — tohu va vohu — covered in darkness. Then Isaiah 45:18 says God did not create the earth tohu. So what happened? In Episode 3 of The War Before Genesis, Bennett examines one of the most debated interpretations of the opening verses of the Bible: the Gap Theory. Could Genesis 1:1 describe an original ordered creation, followed by a catastrophic judgment connected to Lucifer’s rebellion? Could Genesis 1:3 onward describe restoration rather than creation from nothing? We examine: • Genesis 1:1–2 and the Hebrew behind “was” and “became” • The meaning of tohu va vohu • Isaiah 45:18 and God’s statement about the creation of the earth • Jeremiah 4 and Isaiah 34 • Lucifer’s rebellion and Ezekiel 28 • The sons of God in Job 38 • The possibility of a pre-Adamic world • Darkness over the face of the deep • The history of the Gap Theory • Thomas Chalmers, G.H. Pember and Arthur Custance • The strongest biblical arguments against the Gap Theory • Romans 5 and death before Adam • Exodus 20:11 and the six days of creation • What changes about the biblical story if the Gap Theory is correct This episode does not treat the Gap Theory as settled doctrine. The goal is to examine the biblical argument, the objections to it, and the possibility that Genesis 1 may begin in the aftermath of a conflict that started before humanity ever entered the story. Episode 1 asked who the adversary was before he became the adversary. Episode 2 examined the war in heaven and Satan’s continuing access to the divine court. Episode 3 opens the gap between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2. And Episode 4 asks the hardest question of the series: Why would God create a being capable of rebellion in the first place? Stay rooted. Stay curious. And don’t stop digging.
