Fall Asleep to The Tamam Shud Mystery

Fall Asleep to The Tamam Shud Mystery

On the morning of December 1, 1948, a well-dressed man was found dead against the seawall of Somerton Beach in Adelaide, Australia. His legs were crossed. A half-smoked cigarette rested on his collar. He looked like he was sleeping. He carried no wallet, no identification, no keys, no money. Every label had been carefully removed from every piece of clothing he wore — manufacturer's tags, size marks, laundry stamps, all of it cut away with deliberate precision. His fingerprints matched no database in the world. His description, published internationally, drew no response. No one reported him missing. A well-dressed man in his forties had died on a public beach in a major city, and no one on Earth seemed to know who he was.

Months later, a forensic examiner found a tiny rolled scrap of paper in a hidden pocket sewn into the man's waistband. Printed on it were two words: "Tamam Shud" — Persian for "it is ended" — torn from the final page of a copy of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. The book itself was eventually found in a stranger's car near the beach, its last page torn to match the scrap. On the inside back cover, someone had penciled five lines of apparently random capital letters — a code that has never been broken, despite decades of analysis by military cryptographers, computer scientists, and pattern-recognition algorithms. A telephone number written alongside it led to a nurse who lived four hundred meters from where the body was found. She told police she did not know the man. She was lying.

For seventy-three years he had no name. In 2022, DNA analysis identified him as Carl Webb — an electrical engineer from Melbourne. The identification answered the question of who. It deepened every other question. Why the labels were removed. What the code means. Why he was there. What Jessica Thomson knew. Tonight we trace the full arc from the beach to the book to the code to the name, and we let the unanswered parts rest where they are — in a police archive, in five lines of unbroken letters, in the last words of a Persian poem about how brief everything is. Tamam Shud. It is ended. Let it be ended for tonight. Rest.
