The Australian Dream Has Become a Financial Strategy

What happened to the simple Australian path of working hard, saving, buying a home and eventually enjoying some security?

For previous generations, the path could be relatively straightforward. Today, ordinary Australians can feel as though they need to become financial strategists just to reach that same basic level of security — understanding tax, investing, superannuation, property, providers, side income and constantly finding ways to make their money stretch further.

This episode looks at the research behind that transformation: the widening intergenerational housing-wealth divide, the growing importance of family wealth, the changing role of homeownership in retirement security, financial stress and what all of this may be doing to Australians' trust in institutions.

A note about who this podcast episode is for: This comes from our hearts and is for ordinary Australians who don't have special advantages, powerful connections or an easy path through life. People who simply turn up, work hard, do their best and often carry more than their share. People who can feel invisible, overlooked or expected to work harder just to receive the opportunities, security, empathy and respect that others seem to receive more easily.

You shouldn't have to be exceptional to deserve a decent life. You shouldn't have to know the right people, play office politics or constantly prove your worth just to be treated as worthy.

This is for the ordinary Australian who is doing their best in a system that increasingly asks them to do extraordinary things just to feel secure.

And if you're interested in learning more about money, investing and financial security, we have plenty of other podcast episodes covering these topics. You can explore our full episode catalogue to find them.
