DNA for the Win

Yolanda Herrera was just 23 years old when she was sexually assaulted, brutally beaten, and left dead in a Universal City, Texas, field in April 1981. Her murder remained unsolved for 45 years until advanced DNA testing and forensic genetic genealogy led investigators to Kelly Lee Brower, who had been living in the area at the time of the killing. Brower was arrested in Arizona in August 2026 and charged with capital murder, and investigators say he confessed after DNA linked him to evidence preserved from Yolanda’s body.
