Fall Asleep to The Cities That Were Erased from Every Map

Fall Asleep to The Cities That Were Erased from Every Map

In 1944, if you bought a road map of Tennessee at a gas station, every city was there — Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville, Chattanooga. But between Knoxville and the Cumberland Plateau, in a valley where the Clinch River bends through a series of ridges, the map showed nothing. Empty land. And in that empty space, roughly 75,000 people were living in the fifth-largest city in Tennessee. They had a hospital, a symphony orchestra, churches, a newspaper, and schools for their children. Their mail arrived through a post office box in Knoxville. The city had guard towers and a perimeter fence. Most of the workers did not know what they were building. On August 6, 1945, when the bombing of Hiroshima was announced, they found out.

Tonight we sit with five cities that governments built, populated with tens of thousands of people, and then removed from every map. Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where 75,000 people enriched the uranium for the first atomic bomb in a city that officially did not exist, where children performed school Christmas plays without knowing their hometown was building a weapon that would end a war. Ozersk in the Soviet Urals — a city of 100,000 that received mail addressed to "Chelyabinsk-65," a numbered postal code that revealed nothing, where the shops were the best-stocked in the region because the state needed to keep its nuclear scientists comfortable inside a perimeter they could not freely leave — and where in 1957 a chemical explosion at the plutonium facility contaminated thousands of square kilometers in an accident the government did not acknowledge for thirty-two years. Woomera in the South Australian desert, built from nothing for 7,000 people supporting a weapons testing range the size of England, now half-empty, its swimming pool maintained for a town of 1,000. And Mercury, Nevada, inside the nuclear test site perimeter, where workers observed detonations in the morning and bowled in the evening, in a desert town with an ice cream parlor and a steak house and a bowling alley 100 kilometers from the mushroom clouds.

The blank spaces are filled in now. The names are restored. The secrets are declassified. The maps have been corrected. A person born in Oak Ridge in 1943 could not have pointed to their hometown on any map in the world. Now you can zoom in on satellite imagery and see the grid of streets and the national laboratory and the museum in the building where the enrichment occurred. The cities were always there. The map just didn't show them. Now it does. Let the map be complete. Let the names be printed. The cities are resting in their valleys and their deserts and on their lakeshores, the secrets sleeping, the maps finally honest. Rest with them.
