Trial Of Caleb Flynn Day 7: What 107,000 Messages Allegedly Contained

Jurors in the Caleb Flynn trial have already seen individual messages between Flynn and Alleigha Botner. Ohio BCI analyst Samantha Reeb gave them something different: the numbers behind the communications.

Reeb testified that she assisted with preserving digital information, reviewing data obtained through search warrants, and creating a timeline of the electronic evidence surrounding the death of Ashley Flynn.

One piece involved an Instagram account operating under the name “Derrick Hammond.” Reeb testified that the account was created by Flynn’s phone and used to monitor and communicate with Botner.

Her analysis also categorized the enormous message history between them. Reeb testified that Flynn referenced wanting to kill Ashley in 141 messages and referenced hating Ashley in 95. Another 188 communications involved deleting digital information.

The timeline changed sharply as February 16 approached.

Reeb testified that Flynn and Botner exchanged 266 communications after reconnecting February 14 into February 15. Beginning around 4 p.m. February 15 and continuing into February 16, she counted 716 communications.

At approximately 1 a.m. February 16, Reeb testified, GroupMe was deleted from Flynn’s phone. Instagram was deleted around the same time.

Flynn has pleaded not guilty in the killing of his wife, Ashley Flynn. Prosecutors allege the home-invasion scene was staged. His attorneys say Ashley was killed by an intruder and police rushed toward Caleb as their suspect.

Individual messages can be argued over one sentence at a time. Reeb’s testimony gives the prosecution its broader digital timeline.
