The Lost Kabbalah of Thirteen Sefirot

Before Kabbalah became known through the familiar system of the ten sefirot and the later influence of the Zohar, there were earlier mystical schools experimenting with very different visions of divine reality.

One of the most mysterious was the Kabbalah of Contemplation, preserved in the Sefer ha-Iyyun, or Book of Contemplation.

This forgotten stream of early Jewish mysticism described a hidden divine reality before creation, a sequence of powers, lights, angelic forces, celestial veils, and in later versions, even thirteen sefirot instead of the familiar ten.

In this episode, we explore how the Kabbalah of Contemplation stood between ancient Merkabah throne mysticism and later theosophical Kabbalah. We look at its ideas of hidden unity, divine emanation, Hashmal, Arafel, the throne of light, the wheel of greatness, Metatron, and the strange spiritual architecture that shaped this lost mystical system.

This is not just a study of an obscure text. It is a glimpse into the workshop of early Kabbalah, before the tradition became fixed, familiar, and famous.
