Stunning Twist in Killer Babysitter Case

Florida's First District Court of Appeals recently overturned the murder and child neglect convictions of Rhonda Juul, who accidentally left a 10-month-old girl named Aria in a sweltering car, resulting in the infant's tragic death. During her 2024 trial, Juul testified that she simply forgot the child was in the vehicle due to overwhelming stress and preoccupation, though a jury swiftly found her guilty and sentenced her to 17 years in prison. However, the appellate court ruled that the trial court made a critical legal error by failing to instruct the jury that the state had to prove Juul knowingly or consciously left the child unattended. Because the statute requires proof of criminal intent rather than acting as a strict liability crime, the appellate panel reversed the convictions and determined she is entitled to a new trial. Meanwhile, the victim's devastated family continues to cope with their profound loss while also pursuing a separate civil negligence lawsuit against Juul scheduled for trial next year.
