Richard Allen Confessed 60 Times. The State Doesn't Want You to Hear All of Them.

Richard Allen Confessed 60 Times. The State Doesn't Want You to Hear All of Them.

The prosecution's case against Richard Allen in the Delphi murders rested on three things. A single unfired bullet linked to Allen's gun through contested forensic analysis. Allen's own statement that he was on the trail that afternoon. And more than sixty confessions made during thirteen months of solitary confinement.

No DNA. No fingerprints. No blood. No witness who saw Allen harm anyone.

Allen surrendered voluntarily in October 2022. The state sent him to Westville Correctional Facility — not the county jail, not a standard pretrial facility. A state prison. Maximum-security segregated unit. The only pretrial detainee during the warden's four-year tenure. Twenty-four-hour surveillance. Three showers a week. Chains for every movement.

He arrived weighing roughly a hundred and eighty pounds. Thirteen months later he had lost nearly fifty. Prison psychologist Dr. Monica Wala documented a "grave disability" and diagnosed brief psychotic disorder. Surveillance footage showed him consuming his own waste and banging his head against concrete.

During his psychosis, Allen confessed over sixty times. He told guards, the warden, inmates, and his wife on recorded calls. The prosecution presented these as genuine confessions.

But Allen also said something the prosecution did not play for the jury — something that came from the same man in the same cell during the same mental collapse. Two of three experts who examined his condition said his mind was broken by isolation. One said he was faking. The jury was asked to accept that a man in documented psychosis was telling the truth in some statements and not in others.

Before the trial reached a courtroom, Allen's lawyers were removed from the case over leaked crime scene photographs. The Indiana Supreme Court reinstated them but refused to remove the judge.
