Satan's Helper: The Christa Pike Story, Part 2 - Kept a Piece of Colleen

“And, yes, I'm eating breakfast with it.” Christa Pike said that to her friend Kim Iloilo at breakfast on January 13, 1995, about a piece of Colleen Slemmer's skull she was carrying in her pocket. Kim had already heard the rest the night before, when Pike came to her room, said she'd just killed Colleen, and danced in a circle singing la, la, la while she described it. Kim didn't go to the police. Neither did the student Pike showed the bone to in class later that morning while pointing at the brown spots on her shoes. Chapter two of Satan's Helper: The Christa Pike Story, the Hidden Killers documentary on the Colleen Slemmer murder, is the six days from the walk to the steam plant to the piece of bone that closed the case.

The Knox County medical examiner, Dr. Sandra Elkins, started lettering the cuts A, B, C and ran out of alphabet. They began with a six-inch wound across the throat. There were fresh bruises on Colleen's knees, the kind you get from crawling, and defensive wounds on her right arm. None of the cuts, Elkins testified, would have knocked her out. What killed her was at least four blows to the head with a chunk of asphalt.

Pike told police she stood and watched Colleen bleed. She told them Colleen begged, and that the more Colleen talked, the more she kicked her in the face. The afternoon after the killing, by one officer's account, she walked up to the crime-scene tape, giggled, and asked whether there were any suspects. She was wearing a pentagram on a chain; a pentagram had been carved into Colleen's chest. Tony lays out the confession, the autopsy, and the jacket. Chapter three is what the jury did with it.
