SHRINK CHAT: Parasite, The Invisible Man & High Fidelity - Oscars 2020 & the Endings That Betray Us

Recorded February 28, 2020, which turns out to be a strange and wonderful time capsule. Parasite has just beaten 1917 for Best Picture. The Invisible Man opens in theatres that same day. And when Shannon says there's something important to follow up on, Cathy assumes she means the coronavirus.

Two licensed therapists talk horror, film and psychology.

IN THIS EPISODE

The Invisible Man and Elisabeth Moss. Cathy, who has worked in domestic violence crisis work, on how the film uses literal invisibility as a metaphor for gaslighting, minimizing and disbelief, and why horror and suspense had become the genres willing to say it out loud.

Parasite, 1917, and how the Oscars actually work. Shannon votes in the industry and has spent the season in rooms full of voters, so this is the version you do not usually get: why publicity decides nominations, why the voting body is skewed by design, and why an eleven-million-dollar underdog with something to say beat a big epic.

Hair Love, American Factory and the Obamas' first Oscar win, and Judy with Renée Zellweger.

The endings that betrayed you. Shannon teaches story structure and asks a university class which shows had betrayed them. Game of Thrones and Supernatural came up immediately, then The Sopranos. The working definition: an ending betrays you when characters do things the story never established, they would do.

High Fidelity with Zoe Kravitz and Da'Vine Joy Randolph, breaking the fourth wall, Fleabag, Big Little Lies, and why a record store is cool again.

Plus, Cathy's ongoing war with the LA Times delivery guy, which involves a canyon detour, two unimpressed dogs, and three separate failed attempts to buy a Sunday paper.

Brief discussion of domestic violence and emotional abuse in the context of The Invisible Man.
