Ep. 554: Squeezing in Epic Adventures between College Breaks - Sam Chaneles

From engineeredforadventure.com/about:

“Sam is an accomplished backpacker and mountaineer, as well as a current Mechanical Engineering student at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA. After his freshman year in school, Sam thru-hiked the John Muir trail (in 2017) in record, early-season snowpack with his father. Sam went on to lead a school-sponsored expedition to Alaska and New Zealand over the next year before his next big adventure: climbing Kilimanjaro (19,341′), the tallest peak in Africa. The summer after sophomore year, Sam set out on his first solo adventure, a 40-day cross-country jaunt across Colorado through the San Juan, Weminuche, Sawatch, and Rocky Mountain National Park areas of Colorado. That same summer, Sam went on to lead another school-sponsored expedition to Alaska and then to Corsica, France, to hike the infamous GR20 trail.

During his Junior year in school, Sam stayed busy adventuring, climbing Iztaccihuatl (17,159′) and Pico de Orizaba (18,491′) during long weekends off from classes. Sam’s next big adventure was down to South America for mountaineering in Ecuador with friends, as they climbed Cotopaxi (19,347′).

When on campus, Sam is a trip and expedition leader, as well as the student president, for Outdoor Recreation Georgia Tech, one of the nation’s largest college outdoor recreation programs.”

Ep. 754: Cycling Namibia’s Skeleton Coast - Kate Leeming

Ep. 754: Cycling Namibia’s Skeleton Coast - Kate Leeming

Imagine the endless desolation and sand dunes of the Sahara Desert abruptly falling into the ocean. That’s Namibia’s Skeleton Coast. It’s a brutally punishing environment with the only water being cruelly limitless and ironically undrinkable as it’s filled with salt. The other challenges include dodging the African lions that walk up and down the shore, hoping to snag a meal via a seal lion, the only place on earth that lions actually hunt by entering the ocean. Kate is back today to tell us about cycling the length of this incredibly unique place.Enjoy!Learn more about Kate and her upcoming film(s):www.kateleeming.comwww.Breakingthecycle.educationFacebook: @kate.m.leemingInstagram: @Leeming_KateSupport Adventure Sports Podcast monthly by going to Patreon.com/AdventureSportsPodcast or make a one-time donation to the show here. Ep. 752: Riding a Horse Across America - Jesse McNeil

Ep. 752: Riding a Horse Across America - Jesse McNeil

From JesseMcNeil.com:“At 37, Jesse McNeil—at times carpenter, commercial fisherman, dabbler in real estate—decided to buy an untrained horse, make himself into a horseman, and ride all the way across the United States, from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean.A fiercely independent traveler, Jesse had navigated previous coast-to-coast trips—solo journeys by moped, bicycle, and small airplane. This time, however, he had a partner: a five-year-old Tennessee Walking Horse named Pepper. An inexperienced horseman with an equally inexperienced mount, Jesse would quickly discover the immense challenges of his new undertaking. Over the course of eight months and fourteen states—beginning in Oregon and ending on a beach in New Hampshire—he would be tested many times over as he learned not only what it took to keep Pepper safe and healthy, but the true value of qualities that he had once easily dismissed: patience and companionship. The generosity of strangers, from helpful ranchers and storekeepers to suburban families, shaped the pair’s journey east. And while at some points the miles didn’t unfold as Jesse hoped, others yielded unexpected events that changed his perspective—and quite possibly, his future. Written with honesty, grit, and grace, On the Hoof captures an arduous voyage that broke a man down and built him back up, with the help of one special horse.”To find out more about Jesse and his book, On the Hoof, which will be available on Aug 5th, go to onthehoofbook.com. Facebook: @onthehoofusaInstagram: @onthehoofusaOur Sponsors:* Check out Infinite Epigenetics: https://infiniteepigenetics.com/ASP* Check out Uncommon Goods: https://uncommongoods.com/aspSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/adventure-sports-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
