What If? | Victory at Harbin

What If? | Victory at Harbin

General Marshall had arrived early in 1946 with orders from Harry Truman to build a coalition government that included both Communists and Nationalists in China. Mao Tse Tung eagerly accepted Marshall’s intervention, continuing his public relations campaign to depict the Chinese Communist Party as kinder and gentler than its Stalinist counterpart in Moscow. But Chiang, who had chafed at having to accept help from the Americans during the war with Japan, rejected Marshall’s interference and refused to compromise with Mao.

Frustrated by the Nationalists’ intransigence, General Marshall delivered an ultimatum in June 1946: agree to a ceasefire in Manchuria and open negotiations with Mao, or the United States would cut off all military aid to Chiang’s forces in the field. The proud Nationalist leader accepted these terms at first, and when talks broke down he tried to resume the advance. But it was too late. America kept its word and ended military aid to Chiang’s government, and Mao had used the brief respite to rearm his men with Soviet weapons. Within two years, Chiang Kai-Shek’s forces had been driven off the mainland onto the island of Formosa, where they formed the Republic of China, while Mao Tse Tung ruled the victorious People’s Republic of China from Beijing.

What if Chiang had ignored Marshall’s ultimatum entirely, taken the Harbin stronghold, and then negotiated directly with Mao from a position of strength?

McCarthyism | The Threat of Cultural Evil (Part 1)

McCarthyism | The Threat of Cultural Evil (Part 1)

A sense of moral panic had gripped the country that everyone in the room at the Republican Women’s Club could feel. The audience fell silent as the senator walked to his podium and organized his notes. He had been in the upper house for only three years, and few outside his home state of Wisconsin knew of his service as a tail gunner on bombers in the Second World War. His fingers brushed across his main prop, a long list of names, while he took a breath and raised his hands for silence. As he prepared to deliver what became a career-defining address, Joseph McCarthy could not have known that his name would soon be among the most reviled in modern American history. Join us as we teach you about Joseph McCarthy, McCarthyism, and the threat of cultural evils.

Teaching Evil | Signposts and Outcomes

Teaching Evil | Signposts and Outcomes

Some of the greatest crimes in history began not on battlefields or politicians’ offices but in classrooms. Demagogues often seize control of educational institutions as a means of indoctrinating the young, filling their minds with false narratives meant to guide them toward evil. As a teacher, this both terrifies and enrages me in equal measure. As we approach the end of this season on villains, let us look back at some examples of this hateful practice from an objective, historical viewpoint. Listeners on every side of the widening political and cultural divide may notice some familiar trends, and these are signposts on the road to evil. Join us as we show you these trends, their outcomes, and how those outcomes have played out in history.
