The Secret Garden Chapter 1

Mary's mother is more interested in parties and social events than in caring for her daughter, so Mary is raised mainly by servants who obey her every command. Because she has never been taught kindness, patience, or consideration for others, Mary grows up selfish, demanding, and lonely.

The chapter takes a dramatic turn when a cholera outbreak sweeps through the area. Many people, including Mary's parents and most of the household servants, die from the disease. In the confusion, Mary is forgotten and left alone in the house until soldiers discover her. With no family left to care for her in India, arrangements are made for Mary to travel to England and live with her uncle, Archibald Craven, at Misselthwaite Manor.
