Aim for goal: The 1865 Nottingham Forest Podcast, February 2022

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace. After an up-and-down few weeks at The City Ground, with outstanding victories against the likes of Derby, Blackburn and Leicester in the cup, but a disappointing defeat at Cardiff and a lacklustre display away to Preston, before the Reds got back on track against Bristol City at the weekend. Rich Ferraro is joined by Tom Newton, the Cycling Defender and Steven Toplis to discuss all the events of the last month, including the Bournemouth postponement and the Reds' highs and lows. We also have another fabulous competition: listen to the podcast and answer our Depeche Mode themed question. Email your answer to forestramble@gmail.com by 6pm on Friday 4th March to win a Forest mug, courtesy of The Terrace. As if all that wasn't enough, we have the return of Jeremy Davies' 1865 Sketch, discussing football sh*thousery. Out of jail: Nottingham Forest 2-1 Coventry City - The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast

Out of jail: Nottingham Forest 2-1 Coventry City - The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast

Phew. Bloody hell. We didn't deserve that did we? Obviously Forest fans were concentrating more on the Reds' fortune than the Sky Blues' pain, but having taken a deserved first-half lead, Forest really played poorly in the second period, allowing Coventry to take control and almost take the points. A draw would have been more than we deserved, but luckily Forest had two players who kept playing until the very end - Joe Lolley's throughball set Lyle Taylor away, and he drew the foul. Of course, there are few cooler customers than Taylor when it comes to spot-kicks, and he duly ambled up to stroke the ball home from twelve yards with the very last kick of the match. Lucky lucky Forest, but now comes the hard part - building on the result and restoring fragile confidence. Like what you hear? Playing catch-up: Middlesbrough 1-0 Nottingham Forest - The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast

Playing catch-up: Middlesbrough 1-0 Nottingham Forest - The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast

If Chris Hughton’s first job was to steady the ship, this match shows that there has been some progress but there is still a lot of work to do, especially in the opposition half.  There were never going to be too many chances in this match, but Forest really struggled in the second half against a Boro side with a four-month head start on them, in terms of organisation, playing culture and style. Hughton is obviously working on Forest’s soft centre, but there is still more to be done, and the next problem is to get the team to create chances.  Like what you hear? Reds' endeavour: Luton Town 1-1 Nottingham Forest - The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast

Reds' endeavour: Luton Town 1-1 Nottingham Forest - The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast

At half-time it looked a bit bleak, and a few Forest fans were rather despondent as the Reds were a goal down and a man down. Whatever the arguments about Nicolas Ioannou's red card, the inescapable fact was that Forest were down to ten men and would need to find a way to get a result. There were also a few wags commenting that Forest players couldn't see each other in the grey camo kit... It was rather pleasing to know that Forest could find a level of performance and resilience that was lacking over the last few months, and although it took an own goal from Glenn Rea, it was just reward for Forest knocking on the door. Nathan Jones bemoaned that his team failed to finish the game off, but Chris Hughton was happy with the Reds' endeavour. Like what you hear? It's a Knockaert: Nottingham Forest 1-1 Derby County - The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast

It's a Knockaert: Nottingham Forest 1-1 Derby County - The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast

On the face of it, it was a fair result, but Derby weren't happy after their disallowed goal, which stole the headlines. In truth, the Rams were probably the better team for most of the first half, and the latter stages of the second, but Forest did plug away and deservedly drew level when the excellent Lyle Taylor showed a real striker's instinct (and real eloquence in his post-match interview). Chris Hughton acknowledged that the performance mirrored that against Rotherham, but the talking point for Reds fans was 4-4-2. Grabban and Taylor were paired together in the first half, and the veteran striker's injury probably did Hughton a favour as it enabled the introduction of Anthony Knockaert, who made a great impression in his first Reds appearance. Skillful, tricky, with the ability to scare defenders, the Frenchman could potentially be a key figure for Forest as they hope to start climbing the table. Like what you hear? "Everyone's going to miss a sitter now and then": Nottingham Forest 1-1 Rotherham United - The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast

"Everyone's going to miss a sitter now and then": Nottingham Forest 1-1 Rotherham United - The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast

A frustrating evening at the City Ground as Forest played well for a bit, then didn't, but turned up the heat at the end to earn the point - but it could and should have been more.  The big talking point was Lewis Grabban's miss when clean through on goal, but our reporter Baz points out that he does a whole load of work for the team, even if it doesn't always look like it. Grabban also managed to almost score with a much harder chance and was involved in the equaliser for man-of-the-match Sammy Ameobi. Overall, four points out of six wasn't bad from these two games, even if they didn't come the way we expected. Like what you hear? Hughton masterclass: Blackburn Rovers 0-1 Nottingham Forest - The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast

Hughton masterclass: Blackburn Rovers 0-1 Nottingham Forest - The 1865 Forest Ramble Podcast

It wasn't a classic, but no-one really minds do they? When the scoreline starts with "Blackburn nil" it was always going to be an improvement.  True, Rovers were missing some of their wise old heads, particularly in the middle of the park, but Forest managed to look more solid, with special mentions for Toby Figueiredo and Ryan Yates. Of course the icing on the cake was Forest's push in the last fifteen minutes, which saw Sammy Ameobi hit the post before Joe Lolleh's late strike took a deflection and gave the Reds a late winner.  We are joined by Dirk from Blackburn Roverseas, who shares his views on what went wrong for Rovers, why he feared the new manager bounce, and what it is like to be live-streaming when your team concede in the 90th minute. Chris Hughton: a Brighton fan's view

Chris Hughton: a Brighton fan's view

With new manager Chris Hughton preparing for his first match in charge of Nottingham Forest, we speak to Brighton fan (and resident of Newcastle) Rick Loosemore. We discuss tactics, formations and style of play, and whether we can expect to see Forest play with inverted wingers and two upfront.  Rick also gives us an insight into Hughton's popularity on the south coast and in the north east, and confirms the old mantra that if you get rid of your manager, you need to replace him with someone better; Brighton feel as though they have achieved that, but other clubs (including Newcastle) have struggled to improve post-Hughton. The 1865 Forest Ramble meets: Big Wes!

The 1865 Forest Ramble meets: Big Wes!

Well that has been another turbulent week for #nffc fans, hasn't it? In the spirit of Monty Python (ask your parents/grandparents, kids), "Now for something completely different..." We speak to North America's Nottingham Forest superfan, Big Wes Hall, to hear the story of how a case of mistaken identity on social media led to him discovering soccer (sorry) and become ever-so-slightly obsessed with the Reds. Wes tells us what he loves about British football culture, and the differences between US and English fans. We also hear how Wes has started learning some of the Nottingham dialect, why he loves Ryan Yates and what happened when Big Wes met the other Big Wes. Like what you hear?
