How to Cope with Miscarriage and Loss

Jackie Figueras joins us today as we're digging into how to navigate miscarriage and loss.

October is pregnancy and infant loss awareness month. Pregnancy loss and infant death may include but are not limited to miscarriage, stillbirth, SIDS, or the death of a newborn.

I'm speaking with Jackie Figueras, the founder of The Supportive Mama. She is a masters prepared registered nurse, clinical educator, and certified professional coach. She specializes in infertility issues, miscarriages, and grief, focusing on mental and emotional well being.

I regularly speak with women who have experienced miscarriage and recurrent miscarriage. Many times they may not even have shared that they are pregnant (i.e. we wait for the magic 12 week date to announce), which may lead to further isolation. These intense feelings of loss and grief can be overwhelming. Of all pregnancies, 15-20% end in miscarriage; 75% of these in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

According to Resolve National Infertility Association, all too often these feelings can be suppressed and misunderstood by friends and family. In this episode we talk about the stages of grief and how they relate to miscarriage and what we can do for our self or someone who has experienced loss. Plus we discuss how to re-frame our experience with miscarriage…to help us see a new path forward.
