Scole: Séances that Defied Explanation

In the 1990s, a quiet cellar in the English village of Scole became the unlikely stage for one of the most extraordinary series of séances ever documented. Over a period of five years, a small group of mediums, joined at various times by scientists, engineers, and investigators from the Society for Psychical Research, claimed to witness luminous phenomena that danced through the darkness, voices that spoke independently in mid-air, objects that seemed to materialize from nowhere, and images that appeared on sealed rolls of photographic film.

This episode takes listeners inside the Scole Séances, recounting how the circle was formed, why its members described their work as an experimental collaboration with a “spirit team,” and what it was like to sit in that Norfolk cellar as light forms glided across the room or as unseen hands reached out in greeting. It explores the dramatic photographic experiments that baffled even experienced researchers, considers the role of the Society for Psychical Research and its detailed report, and reflects on the lasting impact of the case within the wider history of psychical inquiry.

Whether approached from the perspective of belief, skepticism, or simple curiosity, the Scole Séances remain one of the most intriguing modern attempts to probe the boundary between science and mystery, offering a rare glimpse into questions of consciousness, survival, and the possibility of communication across worlds.
