In The Mailbag: Sherwin from the Bay Area asks “Hey Peter, It was discussed on the podcast previously why JJ Abrams didn't have a plan or outline beyond Episode 7 and all I could help but wonder was... wasn't that supposed to be the job of the Lucasfilm Story Group? Perhaps I misunderstood what their purpose is, but I had thought they were supposed to oversee and steer all Star Wars canon and stories so that there was a single cohesive continuity. Does their influence not expand to the films? I had thought it would be similar to how there was at one point a Transformers story group that would determine the films for the next decade or so. Anyway, I find it all very puzzling that this current trilogy wasn't hashed out before Ep 7 even started filming, at least that's what it seems right now. Even the MCU had a loose outline of where they wanted to go, which eventually led to the Avengers film and beyond. I do listen daily, thanks to you and the crew.” You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today’s show at slashfilm.com. /Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and television as well as deeper dives into the great features from slashfilm.com. On the May 20, 2024 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor Ben Pearson is joined by /Film staff writer and box office analyst Ryan Scott to talk about the latest film and TV news.In The News:Box office recapListener email: Melissa in St. Louis writes in: Hi Ben, I enjoy listening to the box office recap every week, and I wanted to reach out to you and Ryan to ask: How many movies should the average person go see in a year for a healthy domestic box office? When you talk about the money that needs to be made by a specific movie or the overall industry, I’m always curious how that breaks down to the level of a hypothetical individual audience member. I know there’s differing ticket prices and formats and all sorts of other variables, but I’d appreciate hearing your rough estimate of the Average Joe’s movie-going quota for a year, or even just the summer season.Tom Rothman Deadline interviewAll the other stuff you need to know:You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today’s show at slashfilm.com, and linked inside the show notes./Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and TV as well as deeper dives into the great features from slashfilm.com. You can subscribe to /Film Daily on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify, and wherever you get your podcasts.Send your feedback, questions, comments, concerns, and mailbag topics to us at bpearson@slashfilm.com.
