DC Film Future: Black Adam, Shazam, Snyderverse & Elseworlds

On the December 21, 2022 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editorial director Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film editor Ben Pearson to discuss the latest film and TV news, including updates on the future of the DC Film Universe.

Opening Banter:

In The News:

  • (og Erin): Dwayne Johnson Says Black Adam Will Not Appear In 'First Chapter' Of The New DC Universe
  • What does this mean?
  • Have we seen the last of The Rock as Black Adam?
  • Could he possibly return later?
  • Valerie: Zachary Levi Suggests There Are No Plans To Recast Shazam In The New DC Universe
  • (og Jeremy): James Gunn Addresses The Current State Of DC, Knows It's Pretty Rough Out There Right Now
  • What Gunn tweeted:
  • One of the things Peter & I were aware of when we took the job as heads of DC Studios was a certain minority of people online that could be, well, uproarious & unkind, to say the least.
  • Our choices for the DCU are based upon what we believe is best for the story & best for the DC characters who have been around for nearly 85 years. Perhaps these choices are great, perhaps not, but they are made with sincere hearts & integrity & always with the story in mind.
  • No one loves to be harassed or called names – but, to be frank, we’ve been through significantly worse. Disrespectful outcry will never, ever affect our actions.
  • We were aware there would be a period of turbulence when we took this gig, & we knew we would sometimes have to make difficult & not-so-obvious choices, especially in the wake of the fractious nature of what came before us.
  • But this means little to us in comparison to our jobs as artists & custodians in helping to create a wide & wonderful future for DC.
  • Mid-Roll Sponsor break: “we’re going to take a quick break, and we’ll be right back”
  • (og Ben): The DCU Will Face Less Studio Interference Than The Snyderverse Did, According To James Gunn
  • "The position is different than it was with Zack [Snyder], etc. Peter [Safran] & I are the heads of DC Studios. The only studio interference would be from us!"
  • (og Devin): Plans For Elseworlds DC Projects Are 'Actively Happening' According To James Gunn
  • Someone on twitter asked if he was open to producing any Elseworlds DC projects that aren’t set in the DCU, to which James Gunn responded “That is actively happening.”
  • Should they be doing movies outside of the connected universe?
  • Is he talking about Matt Reeves’ The Batman movie and The Joker sequel? Or is he talking about actual elseworlds adaptations?
  • What DC Elseworlds story would you like to see as a live action movie?
  • Peter would love to see Red Son or Superman: Secret Identity (not really an elseworlds story)
  • Other possibilities: Gotham by Gaslight, Kingdom Come, The Golden Age

Kraven The Hunter Bombs Hard, More Box Office Stories, and A Few Listener E-Mails

On the December 16, 2024 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor Ben Pearson is joined by /Film staff writer and box office analyst Ryan Scott to talk about the weekend box office numbers and answer a couple of your emails.Listener emails: Terry from Oakland, CA: Love the podcast. I’ve been listening to it from day one, although I often disagree with what I hear. I love the conversation and the different perspectives. It’s always a joy to hear Chris’ dour voice. Warms the cackles of my heart. But as far as the top five Denzel movies. I’m pretty sure I was, like many of your other Black listeners, screaming at our phones or whatever they listen to the podcasts on. You all made some great points and had some great picks. There were some deep cuts in there. I appreciate you highlighting the relationship between Denzel and Spike Lee. They are cinematic gold. But to be clear, there’s no way Man on Fire sits on that list over Glory. I understand the desire to want to have “action Denzel” on the list. I think for a lot of people, Training Day is action Denzel turnt up. I think that all those Tony Scott action movies and Training Day have a similar version of Denzel. Glory is different. The rawness of his acting. The hint of charm beneath that rage. The arc of his character. It really mirrors the arc of Malcolm X. I saw both of those movies in the theater and they had a profound impact on many of us. Man of Fire was great, but doesn’t rank as one of his top 5 greatest performances. Macbeth must be on the list, although I would have had Mo Betta Blues, and Mississippi Masala deserves an honorable mention. Love you guys!!!Andrew from Wichita: I subscribe to Peacock and Paramount+. Each year I wait until Black Friday when they offer deals and then subscribe. This year, for example, Peacock is offering a full year for $20. How do these deals keep these streaming services alive?Richard from San Antonio: Love the show and listen to every episode. I hate to be “that guy,” but the way you all have pronounced Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s (BON-HOFFER) name kills me every time. Haven’t seen the film, but he’s a super interesting historical figure. German pastor who studied in the States and was influenced by the people he met in Harlem. When he moved back to Germany, he was arrested for plotting to kill Hitler. Otherwise, keep up the good work.In The News:Box office top 10All the other stuff you need to know:You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today’s show at slashfilm.com, and linked inside the show notes./Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and TV as well as deeper dives into the great features from slashfilm.com. You can subscribe to /Film Daily on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.Send your feedback, questions, comments, concerns, and mailbag topics to us at bpearson@slashfilm.com.
