Junior Burdynski — The Witness Was 13 When It Happened

On May 24, 1993, ten-year-old George "Junior" Burdynski rode a red-and-white Schwinn bicycle out of his driveway in Brentwood, Maryland, and was never seen again. The search that followed uncovered a ring of men who had allegedly been harming children in the neighborhood for a quarter-century — but none of them were charged in Junior’s disappearance. His remains were never found. His bike was never found. Only a bicycle rim, recovered near a tennis court three blocks from home.

Joseph Lynch was one of the men convicted in 1994. He lived on Varnum Street, blocks from the Burdynski family. He served twenty years and was released in 2006. According to court records, he allegedly went on to harm two teenagers between 2007 and 2014 at a home in Mount Rainier.

The 2026 investigation into those allegations is what broke the Burdynski case. Detectives identified a man — now in his mid-forties — who had been a Brentwood resident in 1993 and was thirteen when Junior disappeared. Police say the man told detectives he was inside a home with Junior and Lynch on the day of the disappearance, that Lynch ordered what happened, and that Junior died.

Lynch was charged on September 17, 2026, with second-degree murder and multiple offenses against a minor. Bond was denied. The witness has not been charged — prosecutors cited his age at the time and the fact that he had allegedly been under Lynch’s control for years. He is cooperating.

No body has been recovered. No physical evidence has been publicly disclosed. The case rests on one man’s account. Police believe Lynch harmed others and are asking them to call 301-772-4930.
