Box Breathing: Your Nervous System's Reset Button

# STRESS RELIEF Hey there, I'm Julia Cartwright, and I'm so glad you're here. You know, it's Sunday morning, September 21st, and if you're listening to this, chances are you've got something on your mind. Maybe it's the week ahead, or something that didn't go the way you wanted. That heaviness that sits right in your chest—I know it well. Today, we're going to work with that together, and I promise you'll feel a little lighter when we're done. So find yourself a comfortable seat. Somewhere you won't be interrupted for the next few minutes. This is your time. Go ahead and let your shoulders drop away from your ears. Maybe close your eyes, or soften your gaze. There's no right way to do this. Just be here. Now, let's start really simple. I want you to notice your breath. Don't change it yet. Just observe it like you're watching leaves float down a stream. What does your breath feel like right now? Is it shallow, deep, fast? There's no judgment here. Just notice. Here's the technique I want to share with you today, and it's one of my favorites because it actually works with your nervous system instead of against it. It's called Box Breathing, and it's what I use when I'm feeling completely overwhelmed. Imagine you're drawing a box with your mind. Starting at the bottom left corner, you're going to breathe in for four counts. Visualize that line going up. Hold it there for four counts as you trace across the top. Then exhale for four counts as you trace down the right side. And hold empty for four counts as you complete the bottom. That's one box. Let's do this together. Breathe in, two, three, four. Hold, two, three, four. Out, two, three, four. Hold, two, three, four. Again. In, two, three, four. Hold, two, three, four. Out, two, three, four. Hold, two, three, four. Keep going on your own now. Just you and your box. Each breath is a small reset button. Your nervous system is literally shifting right now. The pause at the top, that's where the magic happens. That's where your body remembers it's safe. Continue for a few more rounds at your own pace. And when you're ready, gently bring your awareness back to the room. Wiggle your fingers and toes. Open your eyes. Here's what I want you to take with you: today, when stress shows up, and it will, draw that box. Even once. Even in your car before a meeting. Your nervous system will remember this calm, and it'll come back. Thank you so much for spending this time with me. I'd love for you to subscribe to Stress Relief so you never miss a practice. Until next time, be gentle with yourself. For great deals today, check out https://amzn.to/47ZqpWT
