The real reason why you can’t stop at one

The real reason why you can’t stop at one

If you've ever stood in the kitchen at 9pm reaching for that "healthy" little treat, this episode is for you.

You know the ones. The skinny bars. The under-100-calorie snacks. The ones you bought at the weekend because you were going to be good this week.

You have one. But one doesn't touch the sides, emotionally or physically.

So you have another. And then you're doing the maths "three is still under 250" and before you know it you're frustrated, guilty and telling yourself you'll start again on Monday.

This episode is about why that happens. And why it has absolutely nothing to do with willpower.

In this episode I cover-

  • The permission slip psychology. That 80-calorie label isn't just information, it's your brain's green light to have more. When something is marketed as guilt-free, your brain files it as the virtuous choice. And virtuous choices come with a reward. That's not greed, that's just how the licensing effect works.

  • The satisfaction gap. Low calorie “treats” are engineered to suggest pleasure without fully delivering it. You're getting about 60% of what your brain anticipated so it sends you back for more. Especially if you're an emotional eater with your nervous system already running high, you'll keep chasing that hit. It's not a willpower failure. The food just isn't doing the job.

  • The language we use around food. Every time you choose the 80-calorie version, you're not just deciding what to eat you're deciding whether you're going to be a "good" person today. The moment food becomes moral, one "bad" choice writes off the whole day. Changing your language around food from naughty and nice to just food is where everything starts to shift. It's not a small thing - trust me on this.

  • The scarcity trap. The reason you reached for the low calorie version in the first place is because somewhere in the back of your mind, you believe you shouldn't have the real thing. That quiet "I shouldn't" creates scarcity. Scarcity creates obsession. And obsession is what has you in the kitchen wondering what's wrong with you. Nothing is wrong with you. You're just caught in the pattern.

  • "But won't I just eat everything?" I hear this all the time and I want to address it head on. That fear comes from years in the restrict-binge cycle. When you genuinely remove restriction and change your language around food, the obsession quietens. I have yet to work with a woman who ended up eating everything in sight. It just doesn't happen.

  • What it actually looks like on the other side. You have a stressful day. You fancy something sweet. You have a proper piece of chocolate, eat it slowly, feel satisfied both emotionally and physically and get on with your evening.

  • What coaching actually does. This isn't a diet plan. It's the deeper work changing how you think and talk about food, giving you emotional tools to deal with what's underneath, and helping you stop outsourcing your hunger cues to a food label. That's where the sustainable change is.

Your relationship with food can be easy. Unremarkable. Something you just don't think about that much anymore.

And it is absolutely possible to get there.
