Episode 154: The Death of Roberto Calvi — God's Banker and the Shadow of the Vatican

On the morning of 18 June 1982, Roberto Calvi was found hanging beneath Blackfriars Bridge in the City of London. His pockets were weighted with bricks and cash amounting to approximately fifteen thousand dollars. His feet were immersed in the Thames at low tide. He was the chairman of Banco Ambrosiano, Italy's largest private bank, which had just collapsed in one of the most spectacular financial scandals of the twentieth century, leaving debts of over a billion dollars. Calvi's death raised questions that Italian and British courts spent more than two decades attempting, and ultimately failing, to answer definitively.

A London inquest initially returned a verdict of suicide. That verdict was subsequently overturned, and a second inquest in 1983 recorded an open verdict. Italian prosecutors pursued multiple investigations over the following years, eventually indicting several individuals including members of the Banda della Magliana, a Rome-based organised crime network, along with figures connected to the P2 Masonic lodge, one of the most extraordinary political scandals in Italian republican history. P2, discovered by Italian magistrates in 1981, was an illegal secret society whose membership list included senior military officers, intelligence chiefs, cabinet ministers, and media magnates. Roberto Calvi was himself a member.

The Vatican connection gave the case its most resonant dimension. Banco Ambrosiano had maintained a complex financial relationship with the Vatican Bank, formally known as the Institute for Religious Works. The Vatican Bank held shares in Ambrosiano subsidiaries through a series of opaque arrangements and had issued letters of patronage for Ambrosiano's debts. Following the collapse, the Vatican quietly settled with creditors for two hundred and forty million dollars — without admitting legal liability. The nature of the funds flowing through these channels has never been fully accounted for, and speculation has long held that they included monies connected to the CIA, Polish Solidarity, and Latin American right-wing movements.

Italian courts acquitted all defendants in the Calvi murder trial in 2010 and again following a subsequent appeal, citing insufficient evidence. The murder has therefore never been officially solved. What is established beyond reasonable dispute is that Calvi operated at the intersection of Italian banking, organised crime, Freemasonry, and Vatican finance — a nexus of interests so tangled that the full truth may never be recoverable.
