The Tavistock Institute of Human Relations is a British not-for-profit organisation based in London, founded in 1947 as a spin-off from the Tavistock Clinic, itself established in 1920. It has advised governments, corporations, the National Health Service, and international bodies. It is also, according to a substantial body of conspiracy theory, one of the most powerful covert manipulation bodies in the world.

The institute's genuine history provides sufficient material to understand why it became a subject of conspiratorial attention. During the Second World War, a group of psychiatrists and social scientists — many of them later associated with Tavistock — worked for the British military on questions of morale, psychological breakdown, and the management of groups under extreme stress. Figures including John Bowlby, Wilfred Bion, and Eric Trist developed ideas about group behaviour and institutional dynamics that would prove highly influential in postwar social science and management theory. The institute collaborated with American foundations, including the Rockefeller Foundation, during the early Cold War period, receiving funding that allowed it to develop its research programmes.

The conspiracy theories that have accumulated around Tavistock are numerous and often mutually inconsistent. Some hold that the institute was responsible for engineering the cultural revolutions of the 1960s, including the promotion of rock music, recreational drugs, and sexual liberation, as a deliberate programme of social destabilisation. Others claim that it directs mass media narratives, shapes educational curricula, or advises on the psychological management of populations. The most extreme versions portray Tavistock as a central node in a global network of psychological control.

What is documented is that the institute conducted genuinely important and sometimes ethically complex research into group psychology, that it had significant institutional connections across British public life, and that its work intersected with military and intelligence-adjacent research environments during the Cold War. The distance between this reality and the most expansive theories about it is, however, considerable. The institute's actual output — research papers, consultancy reports, academic journals — does not support claims of a hidden manipulation agenda, though critics argue this is precisely what one would expect from a successfully covert operation.
