Episode 13: Was Bitcoin Created by the CIA?

In 2008, a white paper describing a decentralised digital currency was published under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. Bitcoin was introduced to the world. Nakamoto's true identity has never been confirmed. And in the years since, a persistent and widely searched conspiracy theory has emerged: that Bitcoin was not created by an anonymous idealist but by the CIA — a government-controlled financial surveillance tool designed to look like freedom while actually eliminating cash and creating the perfect trackable monetary system.

In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine the CIA-created-Bitcoin theory — its origins, its most compelling arguments, and the evidence on both sides — alongside the broader question of who Satoshi Nakamoto actually was.

We examine the specific arguments for CIA involvement: the timing of Bitcoin's creation, which came in the immediate aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis at a moment when public distrust of traditional banking was at a historic peak — a perfect moment to introduce an alternative that would pull financial activity onto a permanently logged, publicly viewable blockchain. We examine the argument that the blockchain, which records every transaction permanently and publicly, is actually the opposite of financial privacy — making it easier, not harder, for intelligence agencies to track the flow of money once wallet addresses are linked to identities.

We examine the known suspects for Satoshi Nakamoto's identity, including cryptographer Hal Finney, computer scientist Nick Szabo, and Australian businessman Craig Wright. We examine what the specific technical knowledge required to create Bitcoin implies about its origins — and why some researchers argue that the combination of cryptographic expertise, economic theory, and network engineering required suggests an institutional rather than individual creator.
