HIV/AIDS was first clinically recognised in 1981. By the time the virus was identified and named in 1984, it had already killed thousands of people, predominantly gay men and intravenous drug users in the United States. The official scientific account of AIDS's origin traces it to a zoonotic transmission event — a jump from chimpanzees to humans in Central Africa, most likely in the 1920s — that spread slowly through human populations before exploding into a global pandemic.

The conspiracy theory is different: that AIDS was not a natural zoonotic spillover but a deliberately engineered biological weapon, created in a US government laboratory, tested on specific target populations, and deployed either accidentally or intentionally.

In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine the man-made AIDS theory — one of the most persistent bioweapon conspiracy theories in history — and the evidence on both sides. The theory has been most prominent and most damaging in Black American communities, where surveys have consistently shown significantly higher rates of belief in the man-made AIDS theory than in the general population — a belief that has had documented public health consequences by reducing HIV testing and treatment uptake.

We examine the specific claims: the 1969 US congressional testimony in which a Department of Defense official described a research programme to create a synthetic biological agent with no natural immunity, the Soviet disinformation campaign Operation INFEKTION which seeded the man-made AIDS story through media outlets in the 1980s, and the specific allegations made by East German scientist Jakob Segal that AIDS was created at Fort Detrick.

We examine what the scientific consensus actually shows about the origins of HIV, what the genomic evidence demonstrates about the timeline of human infection, and the legitimate historical context — including the documented Tuskegee Syphilis Study — that makes African American distrust of government medical claims rational rather than simply conspiratorial.
