The claim that the world's elite secretly practice Satanic rituals has been one of the most persistent and most searched conspiracy themes across the history of modern conspiracy theory. It appeared in the Satanic Panic of the 1980s and early 1990s, when hundreds of day care workers across the United States were accused of ritual abuse in cases that later proved to be based on fabricated testimony. It reappeared in the QAnon movement of 2016 to 2021. And it connects to every major conspiracy narrative about elite control — from the Illuminati to the Bohemian Grove to Jeffrey Epstein.

In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine the Satanic elite conspiracy theory — its historical roots, the specific evidence cited by believers, and the important distinction between the documented reality of elite gatherings with theatrical occult aesthetics and the specific claim of literal Satanic ritual practice.

We examine the documented cases: the Bohemian Grove Cremation of Care ritual, in which robed figures burn an effigy before a giant owl — theatrical and strange, but publicly confirmed. We examine the Anton LaVey Church of Satan, which has had celebrity and cultural elite members and which practices a form of Satanism that is explicitly atheistic rather than theistic. We examine the specific leaked emails and artwork connected to high-profile figures that conspiracy theorists identified as coded Satanic symbolism.

We examine the history of the Satanic Panic — the extraordinary period in which thousands of people in the United States were accused of organised ritual abuse, dozens were imprisoned, children were subjected to leading questioning that produced detailed accounts of impossible abuse scenarios, and the entire cultural episode was ultimately revealed to be based on false memory syndrome, leading questioning, and moral panic rather than any documented abuse ring.

We also examine the psychological literature on why Satan, as a figure, plays such a central role in conspiracy thinking about elite power.
