At the eastern tip of Long Island, New York, sits Camp Hero — a decommissioned Air Force radar station whose distinctive AN/FPS-35 radar tower still dominates the landscape. The base was officially closed in 1969. According to a series of books published in the 1990s by Preston Nichols and Peter Moon, it was not closed at all. It went underground. And what continued beneath Camp Hero, in tunnels and laboratories that do not appear on any official map, was one of the most ambitious and disturbing classified research programmes ever conducted: the Montauk Project — a continuation and expansion of the Philadelphia Experiment's alleged work in electromagnetic mind control, time travel, psychic warfare, and contact with non-human intelligences.

In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine the Montauk Project — the specific claims, the individuals who have made them, the documented history of the site, and what the Montauk myth tells us about how conspiracy culture generates and sustains narratives that lack conventional evidentiary foundations but persist for decades regardless.

The Montauk books, beginning with Montauk: Experiments in Time in 1992, describe a programme in which gifted psychic subjects — particularly a man named Duncan Cameron — were seated in a specially constructed chair that amplified their mental output and used it to manipulate reality. Time portals were allegedly opened. Beings from other dimensions entered. Experiments on kidnapped children were conducted. The project was eventually shut down, according to the accounts, when Cameron psychically summoned a large beast that rampaged through the facility. The researchers responded by pulling the power. The beast disappeared. The tunnels were sealed.

The specific claims of the Montauk books are not supported by any documentary evidence. No government document, no whistleblower with verifiable credentials, no physical examination of Camp Hero — which has been open to the public as a state park since 2002 — has produced evidence of the underground facilities described. Archaeological and structural surveys of the site have not found tunnels of the scale the books describe. Preston Nichols' credentials and the reliability of his account have been consistently questioned. Al Bielek, who claimed to be a survivor of both the Philadelphia Experiment and Montauk, provided accounts that shifted substantially across different tellings.

What makes the Montauk story culturally significant is less its evidentiary weight and more its influence. The Netflix series Stranger Things draws heavily and explicitly on the Montauk mythology — its original working title was Montauk. The image of a gifted child in a government laboratory, psychically connected to a portal to another dimension, is borrowed almost directly from the Nichols books. In this sense, the Montauk Project achieved a kind of cultural reality: it shaped how a generation imagines secret government experimentation, regardless of whether any of its specific claims are true.
