Episode 108: The Protocols of the Elders of Zion — The Most Dangerous Forgery in History

The Protocols of the Elders of Zion is a fabricated text. This is not a matter of interpretation or contested historiography — it is an established, documented, judicially and academically confirmed fact. The text, which purports to describe a secret Jewish plan for world domination, was exposed as a forgery as early as 1921, when Times of London correspondent Philip Graves demonstrated that large portions of it had been plagiarised, nearly word for word, from an 1864 French political satire by Maurice Joly called The Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu — a text that had nothing to do with Jewish people. The Protocols were fabricated by the Tsarist secret police, the Okhrana, around 1903, as part of a deliberate campaign to direct popular discontent toward Jewish communities. And yet, despite being a proven forgery, it became one of the most widely distributed texts of the twentieth century, cited by Henry Ford, used by the Nazi regime as justification for genocide, and still in active circulation across the world today.

In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine the Protocols — their origins, their exposure as a forgery, the mechanism by which a documented fabrication became and remains one of the most influential antisemitic texts in history, and what their continued circulation tells us about how conspiracy theory intersects with hatred.

The history of the Protocols' forgery is itself illuminating about how disinformation operates. The Okhrana's forgers took Joly's dialogue — in which Machiavelli describes cynical strategies for autocratic control — and substituted "Jewish elders" for Machiavelli, turning a critique of Napoleon III's authoritarianism into a supposed Jewish blueprint for the same. The plagiarism was not subtle: entire passages are near-verbatim copies. The text was used to justify pogroms against Jewish communities in Russia and across Eastern Europe. When it was translated into German and distributed in the early 1920s, it found an audience in a humiliated post-war Germany that was primed for an explanation for its defeat. The Protocols told that story: Jews had stabbed Germany in the back. The Holocaust would not have taken the form it did without this text.

Henry Ford published excerpts in his newspaper, the Dearborn Independent, and compiled them into a four-volume book called The International Jew: The World's Foremost Problem. Half a million copies were distributed across the United States. Ford later apologised and retracted the publication. Adolf Hitler kept a portrait of Ford in his office and cited the Dearborn Independent in Mein Kampf.
