Episode 111: The Assassination of RFK — The Wrong Gun in the Wrong Hand

On June 5th, 1968, Robert F. Kennedy won the California Democratic primary and delivered a victory speech at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. Minutes later, walking through the hotel's kitchen pantry, he was shot. Three shots struck Kennedy. He died the following day. A young Palestinian immigrant named Sirhan Bishara Sirhan was wrestled to the ground at the scene, still holding a revolver. He was convicted of the murder and has been in prison ever since. The case, unlike the assassination of his brother John five years earlier, produced a suspect caught at the scene, a conviction, and an apparently settled record. And yet, across the decades that followed, a growing body of evidence — acoustic analysis, ballistic findings, witness testimony, and Sirhan's own unusual mental state — has raised questions that the official account has never fully answered. The assassination of Robert Kennedy may be the most underexamined political murder of the twentieth century.

In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine the RFK assassination — the specific physical evidence that appears inconsistent with the official account, the documented involvement of a second gunman, the strange circumstances of Sirhan's psychological state and his claims of having no memory of the shooting, and the political context of what was at stake when Kennedy was killed.

The foundational problem with the official account is ballistic. The Los Angeles County coroner, Thomas Noguchi, concluded from his autopsy that Kennedy was shot from behind, at close range — with the fatal shot fired from no more than one to three inches away from the back of Kennedy's head, from a position below and behind the right ear. Multiple witnesses placed Sirhan in front of Kennedy at the time of the shooting, never closer than a few feet. Sirhan's gun, a .22 calibre Iver Johnson revolver, held eight rounds. The official account requires that Sirhan fired all eight rounds. But physical evidence — bullet holes in the pantry's door frames — suggested that more than eight shots were fired, a finding that the LAPD and the FBI both disputed and that the door frames themselves, removed after the investigation, can no longer be examined.

The second gunman theory centres on Thane Eugene Cesar, a private security guard who was directly behind Kennedy at the moment of the shooting, on the right side — the side from which the fatal shot was fired, according to the autopsy. Cesar was carrying a .22 calibre weapon and initially told investigators he had drawn it. He later changed this statement. He was never seriously investigated as a suspect.
