The case was closed relatively quickly, and within months the world had moved on to the grief of the Kennedy administration, which would have its own tragedy to absorb the following year. But questions about Marilyn Monroe's death — its timing, its circumstances, the behaviour of those around her in her final hours, and the possible involvement of the Kennedy family — have never fully gone away. She was, at the time of her death, one of the most famous women in the world, and she had been having affairs with both John and Robert Kennedy. Whatever she knew, and whoever she told, her death has always carried the weight of that context.

In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine the circumstances of Marilyn Monroe's death — the physical evidence, the timeline of that night, the behaviour of her housekeeper Eunice Murray and her psychiatrist Dr. Ralph Greenson, the possible involvement of Robert Kennedy, and what the documented record actually allows us to conclude.

The physical evidence contains genuine anomalies. The level of barbiturates found in Monroe's blood was high enough to kill her several times over, and yet her stomach contents showed no evidence of the quantities of pills required to reach that blood level — a discrepancy that has never been satisfactorily explained by those who defend the suicide ruling, and which some forensic pathologists have argued is consistent with injection rather than ingestion. The timeline reported by Eunice Murray — her housekeeper — shifted substantially across different interviews given in different decades, with Murray admitting in a 1985 BBC documentary that she had not been entirely truthful about the events of that night.

Robert Kennedy's presence in Los Angeles on August 4th is documented. He was seen at the Beverly Hilton. Whether he visited Monroe that day or evening, and what they discussed, has been the subject of decades of investigation, testimony, and allegation. Some accounts, including those of former Los Angeles Police Department officers, claim that Monroe had audio recordings of conversations with the Kennedys stored at her home — recordings that were removed before the formal police investigation began.

The FBI had an active file on Monroe, driven partly by her relationship with Arthur Miller, who had been investigated for communist sympathies, and partly by surveillance of the Kennedys. J. Edgar Hoover's interest in the private lives of powerful figures, and his collection of compromising material, extended to Monroe in ways that the bureau's files — partially released — confirm in general if not in specific detail.
