Episode 117: 5G and the Human Body — Surveillance Network or Health Hazard?

When the COVID-19 pandemic began spreading across the world in early 2020, it arrived alongside another phenomenon: the burning of 5G phone masts across the United Kingdom. Dozens of attacks on telecommunications infrastructure were carried out by people who had become convinced, through a combination of social media videos and rapidly circulating claims, that the new fifth-generation wireless network was either causing the symptoms attributed to the coronavirus, or was the vehicle through which a population control agenda was being implemented. The link between 5G and COVID was biologically nonsensical — a virus cannot be transmitted by radio waves — and the mast attacks caused millions in damage and disrupted emergency service communications. But the 5G conspiracy, in its various forms, did not begin with COVID and did not end with the pandemic. It is part of a longer history of concern about electromagnetic radiation and its effects on human biology — a history that begins with legitimate scientific questions and extends into territory that the evidence does not support.

In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine the 5G debate — separating the genuine scientific questions about electromagnetic radiation and public health from the more extreme claims about surveillance infrastructure, population control, and the weaponisation of wireless networks.

The scientific consensus on electromagnetic radiation from mobile networks is that non-ionising radiation at the frequencies and power levels used in commercial wireless communications does not cause cancer or other biological harm. This consensus is supported by decades of epidemiological research, multiple large-scale studies, and the positions of the WHO, the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection, and major national health agencies. The distinction between ionising radiation — X-rays, gamma rays, ultraviolet light — which carries enough energy to damage DNA, and non-ionising radiation — radio waves, microwaves — which does not, is fundamental and not disputed by mainstream science.

The legitimate scientific concerns exist at the margins. Some researchers have argued that chronic low-level exposure to non-ionising radiation may have biological effects that are not yet fully understood — affecting sleep patterns, cellular stress responses, or reproductive biology. The International Agency for Research on Cancer classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" in 2011 — the same classification used for coffee and talcum powder — a precautionary designation that reflects uncertainty rather than established risk. The higher frequencies used in some 5G implementations are new enough that long-term studies do not yet exist.
