Episode 122: The Oklahoma City Bombing — Was Timothy McVeigh Alone?

On April 19th, 1995, a truck bomb detonated outside the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. One hundred and sixty-eight people died, including nineteen children in the building's daycare centre. It was the deadliest domestic terror attack in American history until September 11th, 2001. Timothy McVeigh, a former Army soldier radicalised by anti-government literature and the violent end of the Waco siege two years earlier, was arrested within hours and later executed. His accomplice Terry Nichols received life in prison. The official account — two men, motivated by anti-government ideology, building and detonating a truck bomb as revenge for Waco — is the account that has shaped how the bombing is remembered. But a persistent body of investigative work, and some of the evidence gathered during the investigation, has raised questions about whether McVeigh and Nichols acted alone — and whether a wider network, possibly involving a third party McVeigh referred to as "John Doe No. 2," has never been fully identified.

In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine the Oklahoma City bombing — the physical evidence, the witness accounts of additional suspects, McVeigh's own statements about his network, and the specific claims that the attack had foreign connections, militia network support, or even government foreknowledge.

The most documented question in the case concerns "John Doe No. 2" — a figure whose composite sketch was widely distributed by the FBI in the immediate aftermath of the bombing, based on multiple witness descriptions of a second man with McVeigh at the truck rental agency. The FBI subsequently concluded that John Doe No. 2 was a case of mistaken identity — that witnesses had confused McVeigh's companion on a different visit with an entirely unrelated Army private. This explanation satisfied investigators but not everyone who examined it. The artist who produced the composite stated that the witnesses' descriptions were too specific and too consistent to be the result of simple confusion.

McVeigh himself was not consistently clear about the extent of his network. He told his biographers that he had deliberately kept his knowledge compartmentalised and that there were aspects of the operation he preferred not to discuss. Andreas Strassmeir, a German national who had been active in the Elohim City white supremacist compound — a facility that McVeigh had called in the weeks before the bombing — was investigated as a possible additional conspirator. The Southern Poverty Law Center and other investigators linked McVeigh to the wider militia and white supremacist network of the mid-1990s. Whether that network extended to active participation in the bombing has never been established.
